Dos_Box Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I've just had an email from Virgin media entitled 'We're giving you a broadband speed upgrade this autumn' which links here: Virgin Media - Speed upgrade This something to do with their DOCSIS3 technology (Virgin Media - Ultrafast broadband | DOCSIS 3 technology | Virgin Media). They haven't said if this will be a free speed boost, but we can only hope! 1
mats Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 The speed increase will be free but your monthly price will go up a few months later. Guaranteed. I wouldn't mind if the speed increase was useful but my current cheapest-option virgin BB is fine already.
Quackers Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Now if they could just do something about their dire Superhubs they give customers i might be happy. On my 3rd super hub since 2012, they need reboots every few weeks, throughput just drops to a crawl. 2

LosOjos Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 God no, i try to avoid BT like its got plague. I wish I had done. I moved home nearly 3 months ago (informed them a few weeks before) and I still don't have a phone line. Virgin not available yet either
synaesthesia Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Ooooooh docsis 3 - something they have *nothing* to do with. Then again, this is the same company that is using the physical size of their coax cables compared to BT's copper cables as a good marketing ploy...
RichCowell Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I downgraded from 120Meg to 60 a few years ago cos my usage changed so I wasn't downloading large files constantly (all legit, obviously!) but been really happy with it still... If they do what @mats suggested and put the price up a few months after the increase, I'll just downgrade again... I can't stand tactics like that... The increase could be in line with them adding the feature similar to BT though where Virgin customers can connect to any other Virgin hubs FoC? (can't remember what either are called) Now if they could just do something about their dire Superhubs they give customers i might be happy. On my 3rd super hub since 2012, they need reboots every few weeks, throughput just drops to a crawl. I've not heard of issues with the SuperHub though, I've had a few friends with Virgin and they've never quizzed me about it (as they would)... Apart from mine resetting once after a power-cut I've been really impressed, seems powerful enough for a home device...
sparkeh Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 My Superhub has never given me any issues. Compared to my parents' BT Homehub its a joyous piece of tech.
plexer Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 we use underground coaxial cables, powered by DOCSIS 3 technology, between the cabinet in the street and your house. The design of this cable alone is far superior to a regular copper cable as it can hold on tight to top speeds over distance. Love the marketing G.fast can do 150mbits over 250m copper pair. Ben
Dos_Box Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 I'm on 50Mb as a basic package and pay pennies for it per month. More than happy with that, however my kids are getting older and use the net almost constantly so it may be beneficial as long as they up their stupid cap levels.
Quackers Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 My Superhub has never given me any issues. Compared to my parents' BT Homehub its a joyous piece of tech. Its odd, as one of my Tech's also has Virgin and he says he has to reboot his Superhub 2 regularly as it grinds to a halt for him too.
hardtailstar Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I never have any issues with Virgin or the superhub
mats Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 My virgin hub has required a reboot or two recently. It's especially good when it forgets its port forwarding rules.
synaesthesia Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I generally don't have issues with the hardware, as it's just sat in modem mode and a Draytek doing any hard work. Gaming ping times are up to 10ms lower as a result of the extra hardware. Their service (customer service/relations) is as poor as it's ever been. 1

Also, swapped mine to Modem only mode and have no problems since. 1
bald_pig Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 I'm the opposite, had nothing but trouble with superhubs, but my homehub now has been a lot better!
haci Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Its odd, as one of my Tech's also has Virgin and he says he has to reboot his Superhub 2 regularly as it grinds to a halt for him too. same here mate, the longer its not rebooted the worse it gets if I leave it too long its impossible to even log into the router and restart it ping it and its 500ms > support just flat out refuse to replace it unless I pay for a super hub 2.
Dos_Box Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 Never had a problem with my Superhub 2. The Superhub 1 was a piece of junk though! Don't even get me started of how bad my Tivo has become in the past year or so. Now it it almost unusable by a stupidly slow wake-up out of standby time and a sloth like menu system that takes and age to navigate through. As we don't have any extra channels on it and catch-up tv (especially HD) looks far better on my Roku 3 we're looking at just buying a HD PVR and binning the cable side of the contract.
