Student job list

Hi guys, I have a student shadowing me on work experience in a few weeks and i'm looking for suggestions on jobs for them to do for me. I don't want to bore them to death with mundane jobs, but a few wouldn't hurt. I also don't want them to think life as a Technician is easy, because we all know it isn't! Any suggestions?

A good one is send them around at the start or end of the day checking all the computers. May seem mundane but then you can get them to attempt to fix some problems, if they are unable to fix them you can then supervise/advise them, and thus learning in the process.

we got ours to change floppy/Hard drives etc... in really old/spare machines. They seem quite interested in taking PC's apart

I reckon you should make a list of generic boring tasks for him/her to do:

Clean mice / pc's.

Labelling - PCs / comms cabs, etc

Filling software, generic tidying up

 

After that it's down to your judgement really I would definatly try to get them to do any hardware stuff that comes up during the week (e.g. changing HDDs, CD-Roms, memory, etc).

 

You should also try and find some intresting tasks for them to do but a lot depends on the student, maybe just assign them some of your easier tickets / tasks for the week with the instruction to do it and call / ask you when they get stuck?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Starting to build up a list now. I am going to place an order for some more memory ~ 50 sticks. That should keep him busy for awhile. Keep the suggetions coming.

Inventory? It is something that is ongoing and can take them the entire time they are with you. They can just pick it up in betweeen other jobs they have finished.

 

Online help/user guides?

 

Edit: When I had one, I needed extra network cables....he made and tested about 50 for me

When we have students for work exp. we just give them mundane stuff too.. stuff we have to do but really dont want to Had a load of monitors in so got student to unpack, label and get rid of rubbish. swapping 50 memsticks sounds like a good idea but i would say it depends on how compitent the student is. I've known ppl break the motherboard or the mem when installing mem, and there the whole H&S thing too.

16 I believe. I'm hoping he is atleast competent enough to change the memory out. I have all the equipment for him to do it safely and regardless of whether he says he can do it or not, i'll still show him how I'd like it done. The ICT cupboard could do with tidying up aswell so that's something i'll be getting him to do.

I have had the D&T Tech make up some 5mm aluminium plates that are rivited to the cases so they cant get there thieving little mits on the RAM. I have put a few behind the plastic backs so when they punch it in they are going to get a little suprise I just wish i could wire them up to the mains as well.
