Mattjstmarys Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Hi, We are migrating from RM CC4 to a vanilla network. on CC4 you have a box of the top of the screen that displays the current logged on username. This box stays on top of all windows. Is there anything out there that can do this when we migrate as it is currently a feature of CC4. I have thought about using BGINFO but this is only on the wallpaper and not visable at all times. Thanks
Steve21 Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Not built in by default, but what's the purpose of it (or why do you want it etc)? As if you're after checking things like students logged on a teacher account normally people use different backgrounds between the two etc And if a machine is locked etc it would show the username Steve
Mattjstmarys Posted July 27, 2015 Author Posted July 27, 2015 It is a request from teaching staff so they can identify students quickly and can ensure they are not using another students account. They have had it for the past 5 years with CC4 and do not want to loose the feature. We allready do custom backgrounds for different user types.

Do you use RM Tutor or anything currently, which you're going to continue to use? If so a program like that will show the logged on users.

sparkeh Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 We will be upgrading from RM Tutor to Impero. Hope you are keeping up with this then: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/security/155241-impero-security-notice.html
Edu-IT Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 We will be upgrading from RM Tutor to Impero. They'll be able to see from Impero then who is logged in?
synaesthesia Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Indeed, Impero will be a huge step up; they will be able to see who is logged in, and if you set up room maps for each room they'll be able to see who; full names too if you so wish rather than just usernames.
DWakely Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Is this what you are looking for? I built a small vb program that displays the username in the bottom right corner. It can be placed in netlogon and run via your login script so doesn't even need to be installed. Let me know and ill send you the .exe 1

the_wuigi Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I'd be interested to know if you have anything that displays the computer host name pre logon?
DWakely Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 (edited) here is the link https://www.dropbox.com/s/xey7vmm6e31qhzi/UserDisplay.zip?dl=0 Its a really really simple program, it literally has 15 lines of code but it does what is says on the tin! Edited July 29, 2015 by DWakely 4
DWakely Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I'd be interested to know if you have anything that displays the computer host name pre logon? This is much more difficult as Windows 7 onwards prevent user interaction with a service. This makes it kinda impossible to get an application to interface with the logon screen. The only way i can think of doing it is for an application to create an OEM logon background with the hostname saved on the jpg? We use OEM backgrounds here but they are the same on every machine.
Sephiroth Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 We currently use different taskbar colours for staff, students, admin and ancillary accounts so that they can be quickly distinguished. Works well for us and means no annoying box on top of everything.

Thank you. is it possible for you to send me the source code so i can make a few tweaks? Thanks Matt
pete Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 I'd be interested to know if you have anything that displays the computer host name pre logon? Get BGinfo to write it to the logon wallpaper.
ITGURU Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 We have workstations set so that only student accounts will work on student PCs so prevents them gaining/using staff accounts including supply staff accounts who when they can't login are stupid enough to let the students help them. Track the users logins, so if suspicion arises, we can check either by pc name or by username as to what has been used where.
6Foot2 Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Get BGinfo to write it to the logon wallpaper. This works for us. Windows 7 Pro: 64 Bit. SP1.
Mattjstmarys Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 To solve this solution i have wrote a small VB program to display the username in a small box at the top of the window above all windows.
ccurnow Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Don't suppose you still have the program as it is definitely something we could use with at my school.

ccurnow Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I have used BgInfo for the teachers workstations, that works perfectly, What I'm looking for is something which displays the students username in a box over all windows and not just on the desktop
