I started commuting on my MTB (£900 Kona) and soon bought a cheap hybrid. The brakes interest me. Most bike have either Disk or V-brakes. That has Disc front and V on the rear. There's a lot of debate about brakes. Personally I prefer disk, esp on my MTB so when I'm ploughing through mud and water the braking surface remains free of debris and water. The one piece of advice I would give is be careful when braking, particularly in wet conditions. You may find that front brake out performs the rear which could lead to a loss of control. If you have one brake better than the other you really need the best one on the back. For what it is, £125 is a good price.

It also needs quite a bit of TLC on the back end which would have set me back £70-£100 anyway. The Tesco bike arrived yesterday and I'm just waiting on mudguards (£23 click-and-collect from Halfords or £29 in-store. Go figure) and some Shwalbe City Jet road tyres arriving before I start to commute on it. The front forks are the suspension type but very cheap and nasty and I'll be investing in a new set that I can set the dampening and lock. I had a quick ride around the block yesterday after I had put it together and found the front brakes not to be the best either although this could just be the pads bedding in. Once I've got the tyres and guards fitted I'll post a pic. The tyres will make a massive difference. You are hybridizing it! Good call.
Simcfc73 Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I remember my Kona NuNu, bright red... loved that bike, did hundreds of miles on it. My current Kona is sat in my moms garage, 20+mile commute is a bit far for me now.
Norphy Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Wouldn't the gearing on a hybrid/road bike be different as well? A road bike would be set up for top speed whereas a mountain would be set up more for acceleration.
mikeprice Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I love my e-bike - weighs a ton but who cares when you have an electric motor to help!! best bit is zooming past people in lycra on hills:cool: even better bit is I got it for £220 secondhand - only 14 months old and sold for over £1000 at the time!
