HP Drivers causes network printer to go offline

We have a user who has a standalone USB printer connected to her machine, it's a HP Officejet 8500A Pro.

 

 

After a lot of investigation and having the problem ongoing for weeks, it appears the drivers for this device are causing the network printers to show as offline, unless we restart the spooler after login.

 

I've tried re-installing the drivers, including older and newer versions to no avail. Since the printer is out of warranty, HP offer no help - I'm just wondering if anyone has had similar/the same issues and can offer any help to a solution, other than setting the spooler to restart at logon?

We had problems a while back with network printers going offline (Mainly the Laserjet P2055 model) and we put it down to the drivers and firmware. We upgraded the firmware on them all and used the 'HP Universal Printing PCL 5' driver which I believe resolved the issue as we haven't had as many issues now.

I see this a lot and can usually fix it by disabling SNMP on the port itself.

 

Printer Properties > Ports > Configure Port.

Tried the LNMP suggestion already - no such luck

 

The HPUPD also aren't any use as the model is an MFP... and the HPUPD only cover printing don't they?

 

 

It's a weird one, as it was worked fine at one point then just not any more... No new installs / updates done during the time it stopped working either.

If it's standalone are you using HP own drivers? Are you using PL6? I find PL6 to just be to unpredicatble and cause far too many issues. A factory reset of the printer.

 

 

If SNMP is enabled, disable and see how it copes with that. I'd set it up completely from new, remove drivers from the machine, and do a complete setup again.

Go to straight to Microsoft and get a driver certified to work. Drivers from MS's catalog are typically stripped down and are extremely small; the 8500 driver I'm looking at right now is only 646k. Whenever setting up printers (especially on a printer server) I check the catalog first for compatible drivers.

We have the same issue with a HP Laserjet Pro 200 Colour MFP.

 

If the printer is connected to the domain then it will go offline quite regulary, but if it is just connected via USB to the computer as a stand alone.

 

Tried all sorts to get it to work on the domain but it will just keep going offline.

 

HP again didn't want to help as it was out of warranty.
