Ten Years Ago

At 08:50 three bombs exploded on the London Underground followed by a fourth bomb targeting fleeing civilians on a bus. 56 people died in the biggest terrorist atrocity to hit British soil.

 

There will be lots of commemorations going on today, anyone have any tales from ten years ago? What were you doing when you heard the news? Were you caught up in the chaos?

It saddens/annoys me slightly that this is the first I've heard about this (not having read the news today). I knew myself what day it was, but not one person I've spoken to has mentioned this.

 

In most of my schools, we hold a minute silence on days such as September 11th and more recently for the Tunisia attacks, to show respect to the people who lost their lives or had their lives affected by the such attacks.

 

Yet for some reason, nothing ever happens on the 7th July and it was something horrific that took place on our soil. Granted, the attacks weren't on as big a scale as some others we remember, but I don't think they should be forgotten about.

 

This isn't a "put Britain first" type rant, or at least that's not what it's intended to be, I just think more people should make an effort to remember.

 

 

 

I myself was 12 years old when the attacks happened and at was at school... Fortunately no one I knew was involved, but a friends dad was in London at the time and I can remember the worry he went through when he couldn't reach him. Fortunately he was safe.

I was watching the live news when it was unfolding (strangely enough the same for 9/11 and the accident that killed Princess Diana).

 

Absolutely saddening when things like this happen in todays world. So much vile and hatred exists.

 

Hearts absolutely goes to the victims, their families and friends. Kind of makes me question a lot about our Country law's that allow certain things (like hate preachers and the death chair - but not necessarily together).

Maybe it should be. People seem to be so focused on other countries that the one they're in is falling apart.

Hate preachers aren't allowed, IIRC. It counts as "inciting violence", plus I think it counts as a "public nuisance".

 

Not sure what a Death Chair is, it sounds metal though.

I was at home watching BBC News 24 when it happened. Then I was desperately trying to get hold of my brother who lived in London at the time. He was with his girlfriend, desperately trying to get hold of her sister who was on one of the trains. Luckily she was ok.

I was at a job interview and saw the whole thing unfold on TV that was up in the foyer. I thought it was a film or something at first, as did the other candidates, until we all realised it wasn't.

 

The manager had to cancel the interview because his father was caught up in it. The other interviewer was desperately trying to contact his wife who was on a London bus.

 

I had another interview lined up the next day and got the job.

10 years have flown by, such a horrible thing. All it did was kill innocent people, those responsible can rot in hell.

 

I was just a teenager at the time and was in school. My mum had to come and pick me up. I remember going to PE and everyone was saying Canary Whalf had been bombed, we all ran as fast as we could to see as it could be seen from our sports field, thankfully it was still standing. The world seemed a very bad place back then, I still remembered 9/11 fresh at the time, it seemed it was going to get very bad.

 

My father used the underground to get to work, but the mobile networks crashed and I did not get through to him until about 1pm.

 

It is something we are going to have to live with for many years to come, you cannot in my "limited" view, defeat what is causing these attacks. An idea cannot be defeated, it exists in people's mind.

According to the BBC there was a national minutes silence at 11:30 today, not that I knew about it, or the school as a whole. So that was well organised by Gov.

I saw it mentioned on the news, our school knew about it.

I was at home chatting with a friend online whose office was above one of the stations I think it was Aldgate, she was telling me what was happening and it sounded terrifying, they were told to stay in the office, but come the end of the day they had no way of getting home, the roads were chaos and tube was obviously closed, one of the few times I have genuinely feared for someones safety.
