Hyper-v 2012 r2 woes.....

Hi Guys n Gals,

 

I just wanted to reach out and ask if anybody can help with an issue im having.

 

I have two hyper-v hosts a and b. Both are standalone (no replica or clusters) , and both have local storage and are identical machines (with the exception of hard disk size).

 

I have 20 VMs across these servers, 15 on a and 5 on b. I need to move the vms from b to a so it's storage can be updated.

 

Whenever i move a vm from b to a. The vm has no network traffic passing through. if i restart the vm it will start to work but another vm on the same host will stop working. If i restart that one, that too starts to work but as before another vm on the same host will stop working.

 

If i transfer the vms BACK to the server of origin everything works fine and as it should.... as i am now everythings fine... but if i move a vm to another host traffic stops.

 

if checked ips/macs mac pool ranges, vm switches, NIC teams updated firmware on the nics.... both servers are the same hardware so i started to think i have a physical nic fault.

 

I've purchased a new nic (different brand) and it shows the same behaviour.

 

I even rebuild the server from scratch... and it still does the same thing......

 

also if i put all my vms on host b everything runs fine..... but i need everything on host a!

 

im sure its a network config/mac issue..... but i've tried so many things now i just want to cry LOL

Do you have port security enabled on your switches for the MAC addresses of the servers? When you move the VM from one server to the other are you setting the same mac address in the NIC settings?

Is this in a virtual sense in the V-Switch management on the hyper server host or the physical core switches?

i was under the impression that i didn't need to make any manual adjustments if i used the "move" option in the hyper manager. Both servers have two different ranges assigned for the mac pool....should i be using static macs with both servers in the same mac range?

How is your Hyper-V Networking setup on each server, can you provide screenshots?

How are your NICs setup, i.e. where does your hyper-v traffic go over? do you insert a tagged vlan in the VM NIC setting at all?

The VMs you are moving, are they on a different VLAN\Subnet?

 

Is the networking on the switch side the same?

 

What switches are u running?

As this isnt a Hyper-V Cluster are you just copying the VHDs or are you doing a export > import VM?

Im right clicking the vm and using the "move wizard" and selecting the other host as a destination.

Can you check the VM you have moved has the correct NIC assigned, example:

yep the vms are connected to the vswitch... we called ours "virtual switch"

Hi, Yep found them, is there something specific you want me to look at? have a big list of "hyper-v" folders. oddly some seem empty?

Can you see any errors or warnings at all in the logS?

I can see the odd warning/error, but that was relating to me misspelling the virtual switch name. nothing recently, it's like it doesn't want to give us any clues!

When you say "stop working", what do you mean? VM shuts down? hangs? or loses or network connection?

yes but only on some of the Vms that i transfer.

Just a thought -

 

On the screenshots the Intel NICs all appear to be working, whereas the Broadcom's are not. When you bought a new NIC (I'm guessing a Quad adapter), was the original also Broadcom or were they an Intel?

yes, correct... if the vm was created on the host to which it was created....it doesn't seem to be an issue.... if i move it to an alternative host.... thats when the issue starts.
