sonofsanta Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 I don't know if we're unlucky, that all the splitters we buy happen to be made by the same shoddy OEM, or if it's somehow a product fundamentally prone to breaking, but HDMI splitters here seem to have the staying power of a paper hat in a rainstorm. We've had these in the past, and others of a similar design, and after a few months they either stop powering on or stop splitting the signal (i.e. only one output works). Anyone found any that are actually up to the job for more than fifteen minutes, and aren't ludicrously expensive?
sonofsanta Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 So it's either (a) just me that uses HDMI splitters (b) just me that breaks HDMI splitters © all HDMI splitters are awful and no-one can recommend any in good conscience Incidentally: these are for machines that already use a GPU to drive dual monitors, and we need the splitter to clone the second monitor to the projector. If, alternatively, someone can tell me how I might wrangle Windows into letting me have this arrangement from a GPU--because as far as I can tell, it's either all-cloned or all-extended--that'd be even better.
LosOjos Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I have had a couple of cheap HDMI splitters that failed after a few months too, didn't post initially because I have no help to give, but at least now you know you're not alone! There's a very good chance the cheap splitters are all based around the same chip and that it's the chip that's unreliable. I toyed with the idea of making my own or just replacing the IC in one of my broken ones, until I saw the crazy packages the chips come in (they were all far too small for me to even attempt to solder by hand)

Not used it, and it's not free, but Realtime Soft UltraMon sounds like it might work. Has a 30 day trial.
