Max_Power Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Back in the day when Becta was around there were guidelines regarding the distance between workstations in education, and also the recommended space around the workstation for the pupil to sit etc. These were (I believe) 1000mm and 850mm respectively. Are there any official guidelines regarding this any more? What kind of distance do you have between your workstations, and is that centre of monitor to centre of next monitor? Obviously some monitors are bigger than others and so would limit the spacing between them or indeed how many workstations you can fit on a run on desk. Cheers in advance
tekins Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 We go on 1 meter per workstation currently use 22" monitors, (may squeeze 8 onto a 7 metre bench though), but have seen a new build academy having 22" monitors very nearly touching each other.
GeekyPete Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I worked out my spacing over 15 years ago and still use it today. Computer based work (everything on the computer) 800mm Computer aided work (using other resoures eg textbooks or Rasp Pi) 1200mm.
plexer Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Minimum for computers I've always used is 750mm x 750mm, more is great if you can get away with it. Ben
timbo343 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Ours are about 750mm and use privacy/blur screens in exam conditions. We had an inspector round whilst an exam was in progress and said that what we were doing was good practice.
plexer Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 If you have enough machines and fewer candidates you can skip every other one to get more than 1200mm in exam situations. Ben
sonofsanta Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Minimum 800mm, preferably 1000mm, with 22" monitors. We have 70cm depth on our benching and that's comfortable to work on. How much do those privacy screens cost? We usually put candidates on every other machine, but there are times when it can get challenging to fit them all in.
timbo343 Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 The privacy screens are only 17" 4:3. I cant remember how much they were, they were bought years and years ago, but for some reason £25 each is ringing a bell. The ones we have only blur as these are the cheaper ones, the more expensive ones black the screens. I think the reason for buying them was we had an exam group on at a time when the other bigger IT rooms were in use and it wasnt possible to swap rooms. 1
witch Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 For a primary, we have the IT suite set up so that there is only a small gap between the 23in monitors at each workstation - seems to work OK
MkII Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Sorry to resurrect this thread I think it's the most recent on the subject. We have a room with 600mm spacing for PCs. There's barely enough room for the mouse. (17" monitors max) We're tasked with refurbishing that room now but are being pressured to fit PCs in this tightly again. Management want 30 PCs where there's currently 26 in there. With 800mm spacing I managed to fit 24 on the plan. The room is 6000 X 7300mm with a door in 2 opposite corners. There are no other rooms any bigger that we can use. This room is one of 2 where discreet it lessons are taught. Both about the same size. We're just adding a new room (750mm spacing, 19" monitors, 30 PCs) and upgrading another 2 rooms (800mm spacing, 30 PCs/ another 30 PCs in the second room that won't fit!). 750mm seems to be a good minimum for PC use only.
Mistert89 Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 We apply 750 (2ft 6in) which is about a single door width, in terms teachers understand! We have a sixth form, so our rooms must cater for adult sized users as well as 11 year olds... 1

Mistert89 Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 We also have height adjustable screens. Same reason.

forkies Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 I specify 750mm per seat, then when they say they need to increase class sizes by 2-3 then they squeeze those in. My new IT room design (given the space I have) is 750mm per seat with 32 computers. One room has 35 computers but the majority will only take 32 at a max given 750mm each, we have the biggest rooms available so nothing more I can do for that. 1
