Disk failure on Buffalo TerraStation - Replacing disk

Hi all,

 

Had 1 of the 4 disks fail on our Buffalo TerraStation. Each are 2 TB disks.

 

These are the disks, although they seem to be discontinued.

Can I replace with one of these? Will it work? Cause any issues?

What model is it? Specific ones support some and others dont (example of LS - Recommended Drives List for LinkStation - Enclosure Models - Details of an answer | Buffalo Inc. WXL would, XL wouldn't)

I would also strongly suggest not buying any large capacity (1tb+) Seagate drives unless you can really help it.

+1 for Seagate drives are bad over 1tb our buffalo terastation is now sat in a cupboard doing nothing did not trust it (Seagate drives) must get it going again with some new drives

Faily faily faily - they're just terrible. Wouldn't recommend Seagate anything these days. Not all of them are bad, IIRC it's the 1, 1.5 and 2TB Barracuda's which are ruddy awful. We've had so many fail it's laughable.

if the disk is not on their support list it might have an issue with it, i have replaced disks on windows based terrastations which are not exactly the same without a problem however.

 

and yes seagate are going through a rough patch (its been going on for a while*) where their disks are not what they used to be in terms of reliability.

im a WD fan myself however the seagate's NAS line might change that...

I had exactly the samd issue a few weeks ago and its just out of warranty period. Luckily though this is the second time this has happened with the first replaced under warranty. It was replaced with a WD green 2Tb so when the second went, i bought the same drive from ebuyer ~£60 and the NAS is running with 2x WD 2Tb and 2x Seagate drives.

I've had three (I think) Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB drives fail in two Terastations. Got another two failed 1TB Seagates here from another NAS. All have been swapped out for Samsung or WD Reds. I won't touch newer Seagate drives now unfortunately.

We have 4 buffalo boxes and its only 1 which has given us jip (bought just over 3 years ago). The latest one we bought (last year) is still going strong and the very first two we bought hasn't given us any problems.

We've got a fair few of them, mostly Terastation Pro IIIs and Terastation Rackmount Pro III. They've been quite reliable in themselves but compared to just about anything else out there, dog slow and wouldn't recommend them for anything other than archiving or home storage.

WD Green drives don't come with any vibration protection or TLER support. I'd imagine Seagate's "Green" drives are similar. Their current range of drives are named specifically for the intended purpose, so in this case you should be looking at Seagate NAS drives if you want Seagate.

 

However, I'd really recommend looking at WD Red or Black, or HGST drives. Seagate have just been nothing but trouble for me.

 

Oh, also, you can use pretty much any 2TB disk to replace the one that died, but I'd stick to ones supported in the NAS's supported disk table.

Yeah, I've moaned about Buffalo stuff here plenty in the past due to slow speeds and some software irritations, but the actual equipment is well made (we are using a Terastation Pro here that's nine years old and working fine) and reliable. The disks haven't been so good, but that's not Buffalo's fault.

the terrastation we have which is windows storage server based (6TB model) which is used for backups has been fine for the last 3/4 years and has only needed one disk so far. it is however not the quickest thing in the world, but they are however cheaper than other brands (you get what you pay for)

I was hoping to use iscsi to our hyper-v.

We temporarily used one of the rackmount tera pro III iscsi models for a server and found that's where it hit problems with performance, even using both gig connections aggregated.

I think this is where products like Synology's Diskstations come in. We use ours for backups and for iSCSI LUNs for backups, it's not slow! Awesome kit.

Just called one of my suppliers to see what they can offer me in the same price bracket for Synology rack.

They're a good shout. We ran one of our servers temporarily off our Synology box (DS2413) and it's damn rapid.

As we mount a LUN via iSCSI directly to our Hyper-V host, if we had a failure of a VM or array on the DAS, we can simply mount the VM from the backup and run it directly from the device. At a guess, that's what was done.
