Colour printing - how do you control yours

What is your school's current policy for printing, and in particular colour printing?

 

As our budget has been cut substantially, I'm having to look at toner expenditure in particular. Our colour printing facilities are as follows:

 

2 x HP 4600

3 x HP 4700

1 x HP 4650

 

The toner costs (using compatibles) for each works out around £250 for all 4 colours.

 

I've removed colour printing facilities throughout for all depts & students - except art (who need it for coursework at the mo) but ironically art dept due to the nature of their work is one of the heaviest users.

 

What does anyone else do with printing, and in particular depts such as art?

 

MFDs not an option at the mo I'm afraid!

We control it through Papercut. Only a few small group of staff have colour privileges now, the rest can send colour printing through reprographics with their line manager's authorisation. Students can no longer print in colour and instead work is collected up and then printed centrally in repro.

 

We implemented this after we spent nigh on £4k on colour printing alone in the last quarter of 2014. There was some moaning to begin with but now it's been in place for a while people just get on with it. It's certainly reduced costs massively.

 

So restricted, centralised colour printing.

We took the policy that exam boards (bar certain subjects, ie art) don't give extra marks for colour, so we stopped students print it.
