Today eportal was incredibly slow and I had restart the services (again!)

Again all these are very specific e-Portal/Facility errors. Have you contacted whoever supports you for MIS regarding the major sluggish problems you're experiencing?

Can you post a screen shot of Task Manager, on the Performance tab when your server's sluggish?

Are you using SQL 2005? If so, try (in Facility Controller) recreating your connection using 'SQL Native Client' rather than SQL Server. If you're unsure how to do this the helpdesk will be able to help you.

if this doesn't resolve those errors, the errors are probably a symptom of the problem rather than causing the problem. The simplest way of explaining those errors is a backlog on the SQL processing end.

Is you LDF and MDF on a separate RAID array to the O/S? I'm sure the helpdesk will provide suitable help and cover these topics with you also.

I've been working on performance issues for a while in multiple establishments. Here are a few things that really helped improve their systems.

It is worth setting up a maintenance plan to look after the SQL DB.

Ensure SQL is configured to utilise the server resources the best it can.

Configure the TempDB correctly

Best Practices for SQL Server Tempdb--Placement

 

With the MIS DB, set an initial size larger than what is required and set the auto growth to 50 or 100 MB at a time. The less time the server is requesting disk space, the more time it has to do its job.

 

Make sure backups are taken before undertaking any work on a production environment!
