CCTV... How to convince the HT

Just say if we were burgled that cammera would pick up more details as the theavs would have to unplug stuff and more likely you would see there faces

Print out a few sheets of paper that say "Smile you're on camera" - Bluff your way through it for a while... until the teachers moan, you admit there's no cctv, then when they eventually tell the kids there's no CCTV you might have some by that point

We had a major problem with vandalism about 6/7 years ago and put cctv cameras in all the it suites and havent looked back since. Im now considering upgrading them as the new shiny school wide cctv goes in at half term and the quality of the new cameras put the ones in the it suites to shame.

 

All our cameras point at the computers to catch vandalism alone, we have had no issues with staff complaining that were observing them with them, we actually get the staff coming in to ask see the footage to sort out arguments in lessons like he kicked me so i hit him, he leant over and turned my computer off. The cameras have also been used to help in cases where students have accused staff of something (grabbing their arm etc) and been used to prove the student was lying.

I put a camera up in our worst room at the front of the room, pointing away from the teacher and just towards the PCs. It doesn't record audio. I then put up two MORE cameras across each bank of PCs totalling three cameras in the suite.

 

Fully aware this is a technical 'solution' to a non-technical problem, with iSpy and 2x £40 eBay IP cameras (along with an ancient spare) it was a doddle.

 

Now the ridiculous situation exists where there are three cameras monitoring 12 PCs, which is three more than ANY OTHER suite in the place with some suites triple that capacity. If it catches culprits then that's fine, but I've gone ridiculous overkill on purpose so that nobody can ask this department to do more.

Always good to do 2 cameras at least so you can film the cameras being vandalised.

I would endorse cameras pointing at the computers with NO AUDIO if the teachers really are that bothered - can't see what argument they would have about that.

Other than that, can you work on the time aspect? Try and show how much time is wasted and point out that if you are doing something intricate and lengthy you cannot be expected to stop every 50 minutes
