Recommendations for HP switches

We have recently been granted £7000 to replace our 5 switches and I would like to ask for some recommendations on HP switches.

 

 

We currently have a mixture of HP 2610-24 and 48 port 10/100MB non PoE switches and would like to replace them with the HP 2530-48G and wondering if they would be a good fit or if to go with some other HP switches.

 

We currently have 250 users on our current network using desktops, laptops, macs, iPads, CCTV and smartphones.

 

 

Any recommendations would be welcome.

I just got recommended 2530's for my place and 2x 2920 to act as the core and this company has never (touch wood) put a foot wrong

They do have a lifetime warranty but so do most like the meraki switches. Sadly we are locked out of them because of contracts with Entrust who only deal with HP.

Although... I am a massive fan of Juniper switch gear. Check out the EX series switches. they are absolutely rock solid, a build quality like no other and nice and easy to use.

 

Cheap too.

Life time warranty and normally bloody good at shipping replacements out next business day, we had a fan fail in the chassis of a core switch a few years ago called it in at 1pm had it on my desk 8:30 next morning not bad not bad at all.

I've got a bunch of 2530s in POE and non-POE flavours and they're fine. If had to pick nits, I'd say the cpu use is a bit high (25% average) compared to an equivalently configured and loaded 2510G-48s (11% average).

We have quite a few 2520 series gigabit POE switches, and a few 2530-24G POE and non POE switches and all are working fine and not had any issues with them.

We have 16 of 2920 (24 port PoE) as edge switches, working a treat! 2920 can be used as core switches be we bought 2x 5406zl for our cores, monsters!! Expect to pay around £850-£1000 per 2920 switch.

We have a stack of 4 2920 48 port switches for the core, half of which are poe, and then a couple in other buildings with 10 gig fiber links back. Been in since the summer and been very happy with it.

 

From memory I think 5 48 port and 1 24 port, stacking modules, cables and some kit to get 10 gig into the servers came to about £10k.

The 2530 is well within your budget which would stretch to a 5800 core switch to support 4 x 10G SFP+ links from the edges. The 5800 can be expanded to 8 x SFP+ ports . The 5800 will also route your VLANs which I assume you would want.

Currently we have a HP 2530-48G PoE as a core switch going over two 1Gbit copper ethernet trunks.

 

We are not heavy on VLAN's here and only have the default and a Voice VLAN.

 

We plan to have 30 APs and they could be Aruba, Meraki or Ruckus.

 

We currently have 250 devices on the network with at least 60 going over wireless.

The 2530 is a very capable edge switch, in fact we use them, but when you deploy your wireless, I would presume that you would want to have your wireless on a separate VLAN to your servers in which case you will need to provide some VLAN routing. You will need a layer 3 switch to do this. A 5500HI or 5800 would be the obvious places to start looking.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I think we will use HP 2530-48G as access switches and then 2x2920 for the core switches.

 

Currently we have no layer 3 switches and the cisco router does all the VLAN routing. I am not 100% sure if we will VLAN the wireless off or not at the moment but I can see it being a good idea but it is upto Entrust if they do that or not.

If you don't VLAN off the wireless, you will be exposing your entire network to a lot of broadcast traffic.

 

Also add Meru to your wireless considerations for ease of deployment, density per AP, 802.11ac etc.

I agree with that but we don't control our network so we are restricted on what we can do. I can ask Entrust to add in a VLAN for wireless but if they will do it I don't know. Something to ask near the time.

Following a few calls, it seems you are contracted to purchase through Entrust so any pricing assistance or advice on here is irrelevant. Sorry I wasn't able to help.
