no-way did that dart actually stick in the dartboard, if it did it's a 1/100 shot, particularly as his dart launcher looked like nothing more than a loo roll rapped in blacktape.

 

I bet there was a hell of a lot of trial and error, and it's such an inexact sceience i think the final edit must have been dozens of takes.

torledo - I'd always thought darts was just a game of geometry just like snooker and pool. So long as the conditions in the room don't change between shots, the launcher, if set up right, should hit the exact same spot every time.

Maybe, but his launcher wasn't very sophisticated so as i said it's 1/100 shot.

 

Plus a dart isn't an ordinary projectile it's not only about angle of release but grip and speed of trajectory are also crucial. You see each professional dart thrower has a slightly different grip and most impart spin on the dart aswell. Travelling that distance (9ft+) you need to impart some spin just to be able to hit the board so that the dart actually sticks. The board isn't that big either.

 

Once setup it does not follow that it'll hit every time. Darts is an inexact science relying on the talent of the dart thrower above all else.

So long as there is adequate thrust and an adequate guide (the launch 'ramp'), there would not be any need for spin.

 

So long as the same force is exerted each time, which is quite possible, then the end result will always be the same. You cannot compare how a human plays darts to how a machine fires a dart.

 

This setup is a primitive automated crossbow - not the same as someone throwing, as the human arm is not the same every time it makes a throw.

 

Now, all that said, the launcher does seem to make use of some form of spring or elastic band to launch - these are both subject to degradation over time, so each launch would have slightly less force (which depends, obviously, on the quality of the spring/band used).

 

Also, studying the board there does not seem to be a dart stuck in it when you see it from a distance... So you are probably right about that part being faked.
