Oaktech Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 As the title suggests, I've got 35 2.5" Kingston 60gb SSDNOW 300 V that I would like to swap for 35 other 2.5" sata hard drives of any description provided they are greater than 80gb in size. My predecessor replaced a lot of our standard hard drives which were 120-320gb with 60gb SSD drives to keep machines going 'for another year' except he did it for about 4 years and kept adding software to the image. Now we have a 40gb image, which, once it's done 15gb of updates isn't enough to accept an entire year groups worth of user profiles. This is becoming an absolute b*ll ache and I'm fed up with it. I've got a limited budget (probably only enough to buy 10 replacement hard drives if I have to buy new) and I was rather hoping someone in edugeek land just had a stack of second hand 2.5" sata drives they would donate to a junior school. I've tried to reduce the image and according to staff they really do need everything that's on it - including the 5x 1gb BBC active 'Being a $religion' series. Aaaaarrrgghhhhh!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Drop me a PM Mate, I might be able to help you out 1
Steve21 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Do they "need" to be 2.5s? aka laptops etc? Or can you use 3.5s at all? Steve 1

Ooh, that might work out quite nicly - we have a bunch of drives left over from SSD upgrades ourselves, and I could use 60GB SSDs in a server. I'll have a count up tomorrow and see how many 2.5" drives we have. 1
Sagima Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 You could try setting up a remoteapp server and not having the software stored on the hard drives. 1
featured_spectre Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 If you're willing I have a Dell 15k sas drive I'd be willing to swap for an ssd. 1

Steve Yeah, 2.5's is the thing I'm afraid... - - - Updated - - - If you're willing I have a Dell 15k sas drive I'd be willing to swap for an ssd. Unfortunately I have no holes to shove a SAS in.
Oaktech Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 You could try setting up a remoteapp server and not having the software stored on the hard drives. Our wireless infrastructure won't hack remote app, I tried it briefly (redirected a few things in the start menu to a remote app) and it was carnage. wireless in one part of the building basically fell over under the load as it is still only 100mb linked. Just gotta work with what I've got!
dhicks Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I'll have a count up tomorrow and see how many 2.5" drives we have. @Oaktech: We have 44 320GB 2.5" drives, a mixture of Seagate, WD and Toshiba. We'd be quite happy to swap them for 35 60GB SSD drives, if you like. What's the best way to go about exchanging them - post them, or meet you in Bournemouth somewhere? 1

I'm getting them together but some of them (half of them) are still in machines so i'm going to need some time to take that laptop suite off the booking system and remove the drives, then we'll do swapsies. Is that OK? We'll work out how we do the swap a bit later, I'll PM you.

3s-gtech Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Any issues, I have a large stack of 61 brand new WD 500GB and 37 HGST 2.5" pulls from new laptops, that haven't even been powered on. Would happily swap them. 1

dhicks Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 @Oaktech - any updates on what you plan to do? We still have a stack of 2.5" drives to swap with you if you want, just let us know what you want to do.
Oaktech Posted June 8, 2015 Author Posted June 8, 2015 Yup... I'm ready to go now. Literally as of 30 minutes ago, I was about to message you! Thanks
