6Foot2 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 We have some Surface Pro 2 on our network running Windows 8.1. However we have found that most of our staff prefer to have them off the network (standalone) As far as Windows 8 goes it looks like we will be skipping that for most of the network, staying with Windows 7, and moving on to Windows 10 at some later date.
Snuffkins Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 We've got a few Surface Pro 3's. I use one myself that's replaced my workstation and laptop. It's been faultless so far and great with Direct Access. The others have all been well received as well. I'm guessing you're talking about the new Atom Surfaces though, which we don't have any of, but i imagine they'd have the same build quality etc. For classroom devices though we started off with Dell Venue 11 Pro's, and although they're nice devices when they're working, we've had a number of problems with them, which are being resolved now. The latest thing we've had are TerraPads from VeryPC. They're really good, and great value for money. 1
hailstorm Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Biggest problem with the Windows based tablets is no volume purchase program for apps. Had one school rush out and buy some only to discover we would need to setup separate Microsoft online account for each pupil. No way would I want to take that on.

Ties in nicely being able to save to network shares, managed by group policy, image them using WDS. Just picked up the Surface 3 on Thursday. The pen support seems like it could be useful for schools and make it less of a consumption device.

That seems like a huge oversight on MS' part

3s-gtech Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 No Windows RT on the new devices (they're x86 powered) so can join the domain fine (even if it takes a reinstall to do so). Does sound like the possibility that ARM powered Windows 10 devices may be able to join domains at some point in the future, but I'll believe it when I see it. 1
