beancole Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Hi All, I have a switch that I can't telnet into. I haven't touched this one since I took over and haven't had any need to (dont really now im just renaming everything with a useful naming convention.) So to set up telnet I need to console in, its an OLD! Cisco 2950 series with an RJ45 console at the back. The problem is I don't have a laptop with a serial end. I have an old computer but certainly not trawling it over for this. My question is what do you use for this? I have had issues in the past with USB to RJ45 console cables but always, until now, had a laptop with serial so its something I have just never addressed. Do I just buy any old RJ45 to usb and if so when I serial in with PuTTY what do you set the serial line and port speed?
Michael Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I use a USB to Serial adapter (from a famous auction website), than a standard Serial to RJ-45 lead into the switch. The supplied Serial driver emulates a real Serial Port via USB, so nothing fancy is needed to use with PuTTY or anything else. 1

jamesfed Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I use a USB to serial adapter and then a normal serial to console cable as well. Only thing I can add is watch out for the cheaper cables with fake Prolific chips in - they can make the driver install a pain.

cpjitservices Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Yes, USB to Serial then set Putty to COM - look in Device Manager for the number of COM port its installed under for example COM1. So just use COM1 on putty. 1

Muz Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I use the cheap Official looking Console cables from eBay (China) and cheap USB serial Adapters as well, it works well for me and I used to connect to 8 + devices at a time
