canuck Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Yes, it's time for a little rant on peripherals that no longer work when upgrading to a new OS. My old Lenovo laptop was so near death running XP that I got a second hand HP Elitebook6920p laptop running Win7. Now my excellent CanoScan Lide30 scanner won't work on the new laptop because Canon does not have drivers etc. for Win7. Why not? Could there be technical issues that make it impossible to use this scanner on Win7? Or is Canon just being lazy or greedy for the money it will get when I am forced to buy another scanner? Is there any workaround for this lack of drivers etc.? I have another scanner CanoScan 4400F given to me after our office didn't want it. At least there are drivers and toolkit for Win7. But the office lost the CD and power and data cables. Hope I can get those somewhere. It's still frustrating that my Lide 30 is no longer usable. It gave me great scans and is still in good condition. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I spent half an hour composing this post only to get a message to sign in again! Thereby losing the text I had written except for half the message that was auto saved. Why is this? Really annoying! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oddbod Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 there's a scanner package that might help you there… http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan. Sorted out my canon lide series. Works on Mac and pc. 1
Oddbod Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Tis free to download and test, real cheep licencing too
canuck Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) there's a scanner package that might help you there… Not Browsable. Sorted out my canon lide series. Works on Mac and pc. Thanks for this, I think I heard about Vuescan in the distant past. Well, $40 (probably US$40 = $50 Canadian) is not exactly cheap, but yes, less expensive than a new scanner, for sure. Do you have to download the Canon driver as well as the Vuescan itself? I'd like to get the full package for scanning slides, but the Lide 30 does not support slides. Does Vuescan kind of replace the Canon software on the scanner and might that allow me to do slides as well? ------------------ Edit: the Not Browsable link comes up when using Oddbod's link. So you have to delete the end of the link to leave the main url only: http://www.hamrick.com/ Edited April 15, 2015 by canuck
Oddbod Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Driver is included in vuescan as hamrick supply their own drivers, check their compatibility page to be sure. But they do supply regular updates to include more obscure drivers on a regular basis. The pro version may allow you to do slides, but tbh I haven't used it as I have a dedicated Nikon slide scanner that is still supported. 1
DMcCoy Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 It seems to have been $99 in 2002. How long should hardware be supported? Even 5 years would have only gotten you to Vista.
TechSupp Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Used vuescan here as well for a slide scanner I once had, great software and only way could get scanner to work on XP as it only had drivers for 98. Sold scanner now so dont know if it would have still supported it.

But it works great, no problems, ever, until Win7. . . How many vehicles are on the road that are more than 10 years old? Spare parts and after-market parts for all vehicles are made so that they can be repaired for many years after the manufacture date. Why can't computer peripherals have updated drivers and other software made so the scanners etc. can continue to be used for years? Edited April 16, 2015 by canuck
canuck Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Try: Canon LiDE 30 Driver and Software | VueScan OK thanks. But the link is a mostly generic one for all their scanners that they support. Because the page says "If you're using Windows and you've installed a Canon driver..." but as I said, there is no Win7 Canon driver for this scanner.
Dos_Box Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 IIRC, that is the very model I had to hack onto my in-laws Windows 7 PC after I upgraded it from Vista a few years back. There was a way to use drivers for a newer scanner on it but it involved a lot of faffing around and I would be back there every 6 months after Windows threw a hissy fit and refused to recognise it once more. In the end we got them to buy an MFD

Dos_Box Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 IIRC = If I Recall (Remember) Correctly MFD = Multi Functional Device i.e. printer and scanner in one. The product was actually the Lide 35 and it was an issue as regards to it not having any Windows x64 drivers (but x32 were available!) and I had to mess around with some older Vista x64 drivers installed via the Canon scanning software package and then extract drivers from that and dance 5 times anti-clockwise around a lone willow tree at midnight to get to work. It is a shame that Canon do not seem to update their drivers for newer O/S but seem to have them available for the previous version of Windows when they release them. Considering most would have taken very little time and effort to update from the previous version it's a bit of a bad show.

Probably a miracle to get Canon to do that I guess. Anyway I installed a Vuescan link from the PC Magazin page to try a first scan but I always get error messages like "No scanner detected, go to the Input page". When I hooked up the scanner I got the popup saying the driver was installed. So I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My Win7 is x64 but x32 programs should still work. Maybe I'll try an x64 Vuescan link. It' just that the Vuescan download page has no mention of freeware or free trial, and the PC Magazin page does say Shareware. Edit: I downloaded an x64 Vuescan install file and that one worked. Unfortunately the scan has watermarks on it because I have not paid for the product. Otherwise the scan is great. localzuk Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 But it works great, no problems, ever, until Win7. . . How many vehicles are on the road that are more than 10 years old? Spare parts and after-market parts for all vehicles are made so that they can be repaired for many years after the manufacture date. Why can't computer peripherals have updated drivers and other software made so the scanners etc. can continue to be used for years? I don't expect peripherals to be supported 12 years after launch. Its one of the reasons organisations have rolling replacement cycles. Well, unless it costs £20k of course, like a car. For, what, £65? 5 years is about the most I expect. Keeping drivers up to date takes time and costs money. Why do that, if you're a company, if you can sell a new device instead?
Dos_Box Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 TBH, I was shocked that my in-laws had a seperate scanner and printer! TBH Apart from larger\higher resolution scanners used by graphic design companies I see that Scan only has two 'desktop' scanners for sale now, both Canon, and both at a price above what they were a few years back. It would appear that desktop scanners may be a dying breed.
localzuk Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Not sure is representative there! Ebuyer has almost 200 different scanners listed. Canon have 11 listed - with the latest Lide 120 being £38.
CraigM Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 It's highly annoying, since if the peripheral still works, it shouldn't be junked because of age - that mind-set leads to the mountains of e-waste we have today. HP is just as guilty of doing this - we had to toss out a whole bunch of LaserJet 1018's because of no good driver for Windows 7x64. Had the same problem with a HP Colour MFP Laser 2 weeks ago, the Windows 7x64 driver doesn't include a working scan driver. The MFP has only done about 7000 pages and is in perfect working condition, but there's no support for it. I'm all for newer, faster, more powerful devices don't get me wrong, but sometimes I would just like to keep using the working device I purchased until it dies.
Oddbod Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Additional: three of my canon scanners at home bought the farm shortly after… oh well… cheap usb units that have had 7 years use. So dispensed with buying flatbeds that use usb and bought a rechargeable doxie with wifi sd card. Much better, imho and I might have to buy another one for mobile work…
