I have 3 external HDs. One is a copied and permissions revoked version of the old HD on my Lenovo laptop, no longer in use. All of the original drive is in this except program files and some unnecessary files. The other two are used for backups. Due to various reasons I have photos on the main HD and on one external HD. I want to consolidate the photos on the new external drive and a copy on the older external HD. I bought a new external HD and want to use it as the main backup. The other externals are older. I've heard that Windows copy functions are not the best. I am not up to using Robocopy which is supposed to be good. I tried to send the backup copy of the Lenovo that was on the new external HD to the main HD so that I could format the new HD. That worked. But when I tried moving it back to the new HD I got permission denied error messages partway through the send. Why? I have UAC at the lowest setting, i.e., off. I am using an admin account. In general what are good and easy ways to send the contents of a drive to another drive? And ways to copy a drive contents to another drive? The "send to" command was not available in some of these operations I tried. Thanks for any advice. Win 7 has it's good aspects, but the UAC and permissions drives me crazy sometimes, making me long for the good old days of XP. ------------- PS Isn't it time to get that free sock offer off the front page?

I set User access control to the lowest level a couple of weeks ago. But I still have problems accessing and changing files, mainly on my 2 external drives. An example: on one external NTFS drive I store my photos. I use Canon's Zoombrowser to classify and make easy edits. I tried on one photo to modify it yesterday and there was no problem. But today I went back to the same photo to make another change, and got a permission denied message: "Please ensure that you have access permissions..." I went into drive properties - security. In Permissions for Everyone should I give them all full control except Special? I did this just now and it took a while for the drive to give these permissions, one by one to all the photos. I didn't restart, want to ask here first.

Well I was lucky that the HP played the UBCD immediately, straight to the main menu. But unfortunately I had a hard time deciphering the menu, This stuff is a little beyond my knowledge. Also had a hard time with the keys to use. Is there a menu somewhere that specifies what keys do what? Anyway, the HP seems to work OK now. But it would be better if I could run certain of the diagnostic programs if they would help finding the problems.

Thanks. I guess you mean run Memtest and HDD test from the UBCD. I'll download the UBCD and see what happens when I run the CD in the CD tray. I do have a (relatively) new PC, that's what I meant by the XP machine being the second computer.

I have a second computer running XP on an old HP Media Center Edition. I don't use it much, mainly to store old data etc. (data is also backed up elsewhere). But recently there have been problems with startup: the screen freezes within a minute or two and then mouse and keyboard do not work. Only solution is to do a hard shut down and start again. Tried unplugging the machine and waiting awhile to start again. Tried F8 to get to safe mode, but never make it in time before things freeze. Any suggestions?

My old EBR 2310 wired router has worked very well on my old XP system. But the specifications I noticed include: And now I want to use it on my Win 7 machine. I tried it and it seems OK, but I'd appreciate any advice about whether it's safe to use. And I don't use IE except where it's required. Mostly just Firefox. Full specs here.

OK thanks. Do you mean you got Canon or your inlaws to buy the MFD? Probably a miracle to get Canon to do that I guess. Anyway I installed a Vuescan link from the PC Magazin page to try a first scan but I always get error messages like "No scanner detected, go to the Input page". When I hooked up the scanner I got the popup saying the driver was installed. So I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My Win7 is x64 but x32 programs should still work. Maybe I'll try an x64 Vuescan link. It' just that the Vuescan download page has no mention of freeware or free trial, and the PC Magazin page does say Shareware. Edit: I downloaded an x64 Vuescan install file and that one worked. Unfortunately the scan has watermarks on it because I have not paid for the product. Otherwise the scan is great.

OK thanks. But the link is a mostly generic one for all their scanners that they support. Because the page says "If you're using Windows and you've installed a Canon driver..." but as I said, there is no Win7 Canon driver for this scanner.

But it works great, no problems, ever, until Win7. . . How many vehicles are on the road that are more than 10 years old? Spare parts and after-market parts for all vehicles are made so that they can be repaired for many years after the manufacture date. Why can't computer peripherals have updated drivers and other software made so the scanners etc. can continue to be used for years?

Thanks for this, I think I heard about Vuescan in the distant past. Well, $40 (probably US$40 = $50 Canadian) is not exactly cheap, but yes, less expensive than a new scanner, for sure. Do you have to download the Canon driver as well as the Vuescan itself? I'd like to get the full package for scanning slides, but the Lide 30 does not support slides. Yes, it's time for a little rant on peripherals that no longer work when upgrading to a new OS. My old Lenovo laptop was so near death running XP that I got a second hand HP Elitebook6920p laptop running Win7. Now my excellent CanoScan Lide30 scanner won't work on the new laptop because Canon does not have drivers etc. for Win7. Why not? Could there be technical issues that make it impossible to use this scanner on Win7? Or is Canon just being lazy or greedy for the money it will get when I am forced to buy another scanner? Is there any workaround for this lack of drivers etc.? I have another scanner CanoScan 4400F given to me after our office didn't want it. At least there are drivers and toolkit for Win7. But the office lost the CD and power and data cables. Hope I can get those somewhere. It's still frustrating that my Lide 30 is no longer usable. Do you mean that the fact there is some graphics program running but not the NVidea one means there's a graphics chipset problem? And just what graphics program is running? I'll try to find a Lenovo T410 or Dell E6420, but if I cannot find either of these, can you please suggest a couple more reliable laptops? Dave, I thought I sent you a PM, I mean I composed a message to you but it seems it was never sent, because it's not in my list of sent messages. It was my first time trying that here, not sure what happened. I doubt that I could do the solder reflow. (Although when I was younger I built some Heathkits.) Is there any way to use another display program? And if NVIDEA is not working at all, what display program is working at the moment? And can I change the settings on it to work better? Should I do the BIOS update, as suggested above? About the 410 fan, a review I read said it was very loud. i note your fan cleaning advice. I'll see if I can find one locally in a used computer store.

OK thanks for the tip to contact Dave. I sent him a PM. Is this the correct way to contact him? Finally found out how to get photos from the camera to here. One of the problems is my screen is about 40% of the content, and usually I cannot get the other 60%. This means I often cannot even get to a program. I'll try to post these two. First one is self-explanatory. Second one is of the screen at startup. Bet no one could tell this. But I like it as a photo, kind of modern art.
