Allow Multiple Users to Edit a File

Hello

 

Our staff would like to be able to save files into the shared area we already have but allow others to edit them.

 

At the moment only the user who created a file can make changes to it and I don't know where to start with which permissions to set or where to set them, is it the files, folders or the share?

 

Maybe there is another, better way to do this all together...

Or do you mean edit at the same time - I think excel lets you do that

Excel tries to let you do that… but fails with more than three users accessing the same file. Switched to a database at that point as it gave more scope for multiple users accessing a file…

But to OP don't change owner permissions, or you'll just lock everyone out. Just change group permissions for the folder to r+w no delete Edited April 15, 2015 by Oddbod

A carefully structured Shared area in a big organisation takes a bit of thought, never use individual users, always use groups.

 

Ours is quite structured being a college, helps it get stop getting messy.

 

Root level: Staff have read

Directorate Level (i.e. Art & Design): Staff have read

Course Level: the staff in the directorate have Full but not change Ownership or Permissions in folders that are pre-agreed annually based on the courses we provide

 

We also have a number special areas

Just to say that if you give Full permission to folders then anyone can change the permissions if they have access to the Security tab in Windows Explorer. Changing of permissions should really be left to suitable people.

 

A few implications i.e. processes such as backup or system operations may not work if they do not have the right access to folders.

I don't necessarily want to give full permission, just the right permissions to edit files within folders on the share.

 

What I'm trying to establish is the correct permissions to allow this and if they get applied to File A, Folder A or Share A.

 

I understand the part about doing it by groups, I'm familiar with the various different groups in place here.
