Free backup solution to tide us over

Hello,

My colleague and I are in a bit of a pickle in terms of our backup solution. We are running Symantec Backup Exec 2010 across five physical servers (running server 2003 and 2008). Backup Exec has started to fail all of its backup jobs and the license is due to expire extremely soon. On top of all that, we are having a major infrastructure upgrade over the summer, including replacing all the servers with new virtualised servers (VMWare) and introducing VEEAM as a replacement backup solution. However that will not be purchased for a few months and we do not want to waste money on Backup Exec for the sake of a few months.

 

We currently run a grandfather-father-son backup solution to a NAS device. We want to keep this method and allow for file restoration should anything need restoring from the backups and also be able to manage the backups from one interface (so possibly SQL based).

 

Are there any free solutions that can do this, or at least come close and tide us over?

You could look at Backup Assist, it's pretty cheap (circa £155 less 30% for Edu a server)

 

Though if your license (including service?) is still valid with Symantec you could get them involved to help sort it out.

Microsoft Data Protection Manager should tide you over until you get Veeam going (the worlds most wonderful thing). Should be in your Microsoft licence agreement.

 

You could also kick it old school with robocopy

Is this included in EES or is it a paid extra?

 

Just upgraded to a 4tb backup drive to find windows server backup cant handle it.
