Server Monitoring

Hi All,

 

We are looking to get some decent server monitoring software, we have a TV mounted in our office and would like an 'easy to glance at' interface so we can pick up on issues quickly should any issues arise. I started to look at ops manager and whilst great it doesnt have that kind of interface that we are after

 

Any ideas / suggestions

Using a variety of bits before, Cactii for network/switch monitoring. Use a basic powershell script for host up/downs/checking internet etc. Spiceworks network monitoring etc.

TO be honest if i could just have an interface that would show me when there are immediate issues like server space, switch dropouts it would be a great start!

Spiceworks one would a good place to look at, been looking at putting it here when I get a minute (Use the helpdesk but not monitoring).

It has desktop notifications and email alerts as well.

I wrote a little php app a while ago, after getting annoyed with the bloatedness of most applications like spiceworks.

Observium (Observium) is pretty easy to set up. It does require your kit to be resolvable via hostname however (yes, including your switching), which you can kludge via /etc/hosts or (better option) create an infrastructure subdomain and put it in DNS.

This is what we use too - got a lovely little barebones computer hooked up to a screen in my office running xibo with that on it.

 

OP please note that the Spiceworks network monitor is different and a lot nicer than the normal Spiceworks installation (which is still very bloated).

A lot of software - such as APC PowerChute and Intel Rapid Storage already allow e-mail notifications which are easy to configure.

 

The other alternative is Task Scheduler itself - you can configure jobs to send you an e-mail when certain events are logged. This also can prove useful. I suppose you need to get the balance right, as you don't want your Inbox full of notifications.

I have overhauled this recently.

 

I'm using Sensu + Uchiwa for my dashboard. Metrics are via Collectd + Graphite Powershell Functions + Graphite + Grafana.
