Unlikely!! We only have around 100 schools on so far.

Local Free School we partner recently moved over to this. No problems thus far, works well, does use up a fair bit of bandwidth when connecting with multiple users but other than that no complaints (yet).

I was just shown it yesterday by my Capita rep - seems fairly seemless, although I would be concerned at peak periods that it would be dead slow.

 

I'd also be worried about some of the larger reports I run, which I remote to the server to do, as my local machine can't handle it.

If you're a school out in the countryside with a small internet connection, It will be a pain.

 

One school i know of has this and its been a lot of trouble.

The SQL 2014 one? Not sure I follow? Surely you'd have a performance SLA, if you do, then who cares if Capita fixes it, if they need to spin up 100x large virtual servers at peak times because of poorly optimized code, that's their problem. You're paying them to take those problems away.

As with all cloud solutions you will need a reliable Internet connection. Azure is hugely scalable - performance will not be a problem.

Is there a cost saving with using a the hosted version? Other than the obvious not having to run it locally... i.e. license costs.

No it's the same model - hosting is at additional cost.
