Primary email solution

We are needing to replace our primary students email solution. It's strictly intranet only but needs to be for all intentions full adult email.

 

What are other people using, what would you recommend?

 

Presently thinking about hmailserver with a web mail client, any advice?

We are looking at Google Apps also. The head teacher doesn't like the fact though that we'd have to move from county and won't have their domain "sch.uk". So I'm in need of finding other primary schools that use their own domain for example "@schoolname.co.uk" I have been asked to find the pro's and con's of using either. I can't see any apart from the fact our email would be easier to remember, we're moving away from county which is a good thing and the school would have more control.

I think you can do the same with O365 if you prefer MS.

Just because you drop the county email, it doesn't mean you can't retain the domain. My governor school bdcame an academy, outside LA control, and took up O365 and is still schoolname.county.co.uk

Unfortunately we do. The way our county do it is migrate all our global ID's to Gapps which I don't want to be the case. i want to start a clean slate and be able to add things in from the Google Apps Dashboard. I have been told I won't be able to do that and will still have to work from their old mail solution to add users etc and that will sync to the Gapps dashboard. They have also said that any local accounts I have created for staff won't be able to migrate over either, which then defeats the object of migrating in the first place.

 

I don't fancy telling teacher X why Teacher Y still has all their emails but you don't kind of thing. So everyone gets a fresh meaning we need a new domain.

Although I am not familiar with your situation I really don't understand this.

 

The domain is yours to do with as you please. When we moved away from LA I just used Google Apps Directory Sync to create all the accounts and either told staff to forward their old email onto their new email or (for a few) used a tool to migrate the mail for them.

shouldn't this just be an mx record on the subdomain, and at most having to submit those MX records to the authority to set?

I would really prefer to stay away from cloud solutions, our head had significant problems with google at her last school and will not consider their services. The main issue is that five year olds would take to long to type out our full domain (some 20 characters) and our previous solution worked well with minimalist domains one per class so even the 5 years olds could learn the basics with limited keyboard skills.

 

On the ownership of the domain we applied and picked up our domain some years ago and have kept tight control over it despite county and now our academy trust wanting it fully signed over to them. We may have been lucky that Suffolk was slacking though.

setup a little linux box running a mail server and some basic webmail package?

That's a possibility there any easy prebuild out there or software you would recommend? I do not make a huge us of linux in the school.

Yep in one of our school we moved from the county to O365. The County were very unhelpful so we just went to nominee direct.

 

While county were supposed to transfer all e-mail they didn't - causing us to do it manually which was a huge pain

You could use Office 365 with ADFS, which would allow SSO, It does have added infrastructure requirements mind, so really depends on the size of the school.

It's a small rural primary about 120 seats and not so great internet, so the solution needs to be cheap and cheerful.

We use Office 365 for staff on the sch.uk domain but for the children we use PupilMail from Exa on a schoolname.co.uk domain. Its restricted so they can only email within the domain. The children don't have to type in the domain everytime, just their username. Its content filtered and inappropriate word filtered.

Staff and children seem to like it.

Is 2simple 2email not suitable? We have it somewhere but we've never actually used it so no idea if it suits your needs at primary level.
