Projectors and cages - What do you do?

We currently use a company who provide us with the cages for projectors. The setup at the school was custom made cages for the projectors (at the time Sanyo SW35's). This means the cages are quite small and i am yet to find a new projector that will fit in them. To buy universal cages from our current supplier it is around £300 so it makes replacing projectors an expensive job.

 

My questions:

 

Do you have all your projectors in cages?

Any recommendations of suppliers?

Do you do the installations yourself or have a third party company?

When projectors first came into schools, they were considered valuable and unfortunately some people decided to steel... but now you can buy 50" TVs for literally hundreds, so it's much less of an issue these days.

 

I'm also of the opinion that if someone can get that far into a building, it's a physical security issue rather than a projector issue.

That is similar to my line of thinking. What do you use?

We use universal projector mounts with security type allen-head bolts (the type with a pin in the middle). The mounts are cheap, easy to install and maintain and we haven't had issue yet.

Projectors are typically bolted to an arm located on the ceiling or wall, so you're going to have to take the whole thing down either with your body weight or other means - it just isn't going to be a quick in and out that thieves want, so putting a cage around it is going to do little to improve the situation.

We typically have our projects in cages here and those are anchored through the ceiling into our loft space. Although as we are replacing now we are using either UST projectors or TVs to replace existing and only using cages in certain areas.

 

I would say £300.00 sounds a little expensive imo. If you are going to continue I'd certainly look and see if you can get more reasonably priced alternatives, although I guess it's because they're custom made. Who is the manufacturer at the moment?

 

Usual suspects really, Unicol, Top-Tec, Sahara.

 

We do a mix of both depending on time available. Lately though we have been having all installs done by a 3rd party and in the long term I believe it will stay that way.

Never bothered with cages they seem an extra expense but you should seek advice from the schools insurance company as some may require you to do that, for instance Ground floor IT rooms without modern double glazed decent windows needed steel bars over them for added security so they may need you to cage projectors.

We don't have any physical security on any of our ICT assets now except for a few in a very public area of the building. Most projectors are screwed to the mount anyway and are not easy to steal so the risk is low unless you have a lot of people using your premises unsupervised. But as above, check with your schools insurance company as they may have specific requirements.
