Leatherman is all you need

I work with stage light and sound on the weekends, and used to be my parttime job before I had to do a placement year so I use my Leatherman from then

 

Always worries me using it when kids are about, s'long as the blade doesnt get seen I suppose it's ok though.

 

I forgot to take my Gerber off my belt when I flew up to Edinburgh last weekend - went through the security check and everything. Only when I was up in Edinburgh did I realise I had it and that it's got a 2.5" blade on it....whoops.

 

Not sure what the security was like but I know from past experience that when I've gone through customs at airports you are allowed up to a 3 inch blade ( not sure if thats the same now ) as obviously its changed after 9/11 etc and I havent tried taking anything like that with me onboard a plane.

 

Am guessing they let you take it ?

 

No, they missed it - no blades allowed at all now. Except in your hold baggage.

Just out of curiosity what do you need to do with all these tools? Knives, pliers, wire cutters why do you need these on a day to day basis?

Depends what your job entails really - I only need the Cybertool for opening up cases etc without running off to look for a screwdriver, but it's also handy for quickly cutting up cat5 to make test patch cables etc...

Sorry I only see in my mind the asbestos survey team who visited our school, kitted out in spotless 'workman' trousers (the type my builder son wears), toe 'tecter boots and the biggest tool belt ever. All they used whilst in the school was a pencil and notepad, no doubt they might need tools at some point but we didn't see them use any tools at all.

 

Before anyone takes offence I'm not implying ict staff don't need all the equipment, but these lads looked ridiculous! My job in a primary doesn't need anything more than a set of screwdrivers, sundry cables and spare pc bits, all hidden away throughout school.

To be honest you don't need a lot of the tools on a day-to-day basis. But I do have an extensive and growing set of tools. Screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, allen keys, knives, hacksaws they're all useful. I've had occasion to use practically all of my tools.

In one of my schools the head has regular tidying up sessions, nothing is safe, so most of my stuff is secreted around school 'where's wally' style.

An army surplus webbing belt with removable holders might be an option. Probably somewhat over the top, though...

A while ago, I broke a tooth on a sugared almond and they never managed to fill it properly. One time I was seen by a very black South African locum. She struggled with he tweezers but couldn't get the old filling out. Jokingly, I handed her my leatherman. "Perfect," she said, stuck it in the sterilizer and then used it to pull out the filling. In the end I had to pay £200 to have it capped but she never charged for the repair work.

When I was at university, the IT support department actually had a tank. They'd all bought shares in it and used to take turns to drive it at weekends. I imagine the petrol bill was a bit excessive.

I've had a multiplier made by Buck Knives that I used until it was worn out. I used a Gerber for several years, even after I broke the file trying to break into a room where I left my keys. Then, about 2 years ago, my wife gave me a multiplier made by Winchester, I've carried it ever since.
