MattDLEA Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I have a mid 2009 15 inch Mackbook Pro 2.53 Core Duo 6GB RAM on OS X 10.9.2 and since going to yoshimte its feeling to be a bit slow. have a few options of getting a Apple - MacBook Pro 13-inch dual-core i5 2.5GHz / 4GB / 500GB / HD Graphics 4000 / SD Apple - MacBook Pro 13" Dual-Core i7 2.7GHz / 4GB / 500GB / HD Graphics / SD Apple - MacBook Pro 15" Quad-Core i7 2.0GHz / 4GB / 500GB / HD Graphics / Radeon HD 6490M/SD Am I going to notice that much of a difference if I replace it? running Adobe creative suite 5.5 and web dev stuff Cheers

3s-gtech Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 It's a Core 2 Duo, not Core Duo. Big difference, thankfully! As above, my first bet would be to stick an SSD into your current machine. OS X flies on them, even if Apple lock out some features. A decent one like an 850 EVO or Pro would help.

Just so people are aware it was only last week that I tried to install a Samsung Pro 840 240GB SSD in a MacBook Pro 13" 2012 model and the device wouldn't accept it. It showed the device in disk manager but wouldn't format it to Mac OS Journaled the laptop would just freeze. They don't always work.

I think what Rick meant to say is that it made a world of difference. I have also upgraded a Core 2 Duo Mac with an SSD and 8GB RAM and it helped tremendously, although a newer Core i5 Mac with SSD or Fusion Drive is still noticeably quicker since the processor is a lot faster too. ass17 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I used the Samsung 840 Evo, but the 850 Pro is the daddy. I'm sure i don't need to mention this but always check the read write speeds before buying, the samsungs are top end at around 550 read/470 write.
