Smee Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Gutted, truly gutted Christmas and birthdays will never be the same, no more books to look forward to so no idea what my boys will buy me now. I have all the books, started with "Good Omens" then discovered discworld with "The colour of Magic", have even got all of the younger reader books and not under the pretence of getting them for my boys. Struggled with the "The long Earth" and am still struggling with "the long war" but can't wait to finish it so that I can go back to the beginning and read them all again. RIP Sir Terry, a little bit of me went when you did xxxx
sted Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 I thought I might have a another go at reading some Pratchett - where would people recommend I start? I read a couple years ago and didn't think much to them - but perhaps I was just unlucky or not in the right mood? honestly start at the start and work through (which reminds me must change usb in the car and start the audiobooks again) What have others thought of the Long Earth books? I've just finished the second one, The Long War, and to be honest, both of them have been a bit... underwhelming. It's a great idea, and brings up great questions - when there's plenty for everyone and we can go back to a subsistence lifestyle, do we need to strive anymore? Do we need to push ourselves to progress? - but the plot ends up being spread too thin amongst viewpoints, and never builds to any sort of crescendo, and it always feels a bit... unsatisfying. There was a line near the end of the second one along the lines of And just like that, the Long War was ended without even a shot being fired, and I thought, Ended? I hadn't even noticed it had started! New Tiffany Aching is great news, though! And I very much enjoyed Dodger, of a couple of years back. i think it suffers from the same problem as the hobbit movies the germ of a story is there its just stretched too thin Did everyone else start with mort as their first book lol? Sad loss as others have said ive stood in line a few times to get books signed and bad brief chats with him in the past and he did seem to geniunely enjoy what he did (and what more can any of us hope for) a sad loss for everyone

Andrew_C Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Re the "Long... " books. I'm with several above. A much better idea than the execution. Perhaps because the idea is even bigger than a flat world on the back of elephants, you'd need dozens of books to properly explore the "world". And no orang-utans.

Only a week before I had made the decision to start reading the Discworld books again...probably due to National Book Week, and as part of the stuff going on at work, I had to nominate my favourite book. I chose Guards! Guards!. And so it is, I am halfway through The Colour of Magic and I want to read all 40 books
