Disaster Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Hello, We have our Insight server setup to notify us on various things like when a user wants to change email address. This works fine and we receive the notification... But for password resets it throws up an error about relaying. I'm just reading up on this and it looks like we have enabled this on our exchange server, but it's still not working. The Insight server is local. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

What is returning the error about relaying - your Exchange server, or someone else's Exchange server? What version of Exchange server are you running? You need to make sure your Insight server (and just your Insight server) is set to be able to relay emails. On Exchange 2010 you do this by adding your Insight server's IP address to a list in a Receive Connector, found under Server Configuration -> Hub Transport in the Exchange Management Console. Is that what's already in place?
Disaster Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 Thanks for replying, running exchange 2010. We already had receive connector called "Internal Relay for Internal servers" so I just added our Insight IP to that. I've also just created a Custom receive connector for only our Insight server following a guide. No luck yet, but I'll give it a whirl tomorrow in case it's just taking it's time to synch.

From the above, it sounds like email is being relayed by your Exchange server, but not for some emails. Are those emails to internal email addresses or external - is your Exchange server being refused permission when it tries to send email to other's mail servers? This error that gets thrown up - is that something that appears in the Windows event log, as a pop-up message on screen somewhere or as a bounced email?
Disaster Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 The Exchange server is relaying emails internally. When parents want to change email address in Insight, we get a notification on our Helpdesk email. Exchange doesn't appear to relay emails for password resets that would be emailed to the parent using Hotmail etc. The error appears on Insight when a parent tries to reset password. Once I've discovered the command to try and relay an email from powershell, I'm hoping that will throw up a better error message. Cheers!
Edu-IT Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 We use this service to send our emails from Insight, as it allows us to track through the Web UI what is going on which is helpful when parents say they haven't received emails etc. Transactional Email API Service for Developers - Mailgun
Disaster Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Thanks. I better be careful, I was messing about with send connectors and managed to stop all outgoing external emails... whoops. Promptly deleted that particular connector and all is back on track!

Do they normally accept emails from your Exchange server? If so, it's likely that there's some spam-related email headers missing from the Insight emails - Hotmail is always the first webmail service we notice rejecting emails if we get on an email spam blacklist or if we mess up our anti-spam DNS settings.
