I bought it, and played a quick game last night. It definitely is how SimCity should've been!

I grew my city far too quickly, so ran out of money, then ran out of electricity, which caused running out of water and waste dumpage...

I know @CAM has it, I've seen a few others from here on there too. I should be picking it up tonight, I watched a few streams and definitely looks like a step in the right direction after SimCity.

I played for 7 hours last night on lowest speed and never ran out of things to do. Highlights are:

- Placing too many incinerators and garbage dumps down one road, creating a conga line of dump trucks going in and out the street. The entire block was surrounded by them.

- Setting the Statue of Liberty on fire (but I was too busy panicking to take a screenshot).

- Building a dam and panicking as the water flowed over the top, momentarily burst it's banks and started flooding my office district.

- Trying repeatedly to build a UK style motorway junction, picking a stupidly tight spot and cursing after realising I had the scratch-built roundabout the wrong way round.

- An important roundabout simultaneously killed ambulance, fire and deathcare services due to weight of traffic. It was gridlocked and had ambulances and fire engines trapped over the whole circumference. Fixed it with a six lane road in the middle.

- Placing a cargo depot not anticipating the level of traffic it'd generate. I now have to demolish and revamp my entire industrial zone as it is screwed from the random ill thought alterations to it.

Some little tricks I picked up...

Water pipes - extend them in 1 direction, where the cost is $440, then put a 1 slot spur off that, then rinse and repeat. At a gap of $440, you can get perfect coverage with no overlap, so it works out cheaper. I added more water pumps and waste pumps later in the game, but the pipework was fine still. Sometimes worthwhile late game (when you have skyscrapers) to have the pipes crossing in a grid.

Electricity- you should build up in small blocks, the electricity expands with the buildings.

Roads - upgrade the roads ASAP to 4 lane roads, or just build using 4 lane roads. Reason being, you will get gridlocked later on, and upgrading will demolish some buildings, causing unhappiness, and problems.

Definitely agree on the 'what Sim City should have been' comments! Loving it, spent 7 hours on it so far, have a 19k pop city with over $1m in the bank.

Well here is the city I made whilst on my lunch break at work :)

*edit*

Population of 9500(ish)

Income of $2900 per week

Policies - Smoke Detectors, Recycling, restricted heavy traffic in housing areas, one way systems in industrial areas.

Taxes - Housing: 13%, Commercial: 15%, Industrial: 15%

Crime rate - 6% and has been hovering around that for "4 years"

Fire danger - 0% (I have 2 fire stations in every district)

Garbage - 2 Incinerators operating to full capacity

Health - 2 clinics in every district

Police - 2 stations in every district

Power - Wind turbines, Incinerators, 2 coal stations, generating around 190MW, using around 120MW

Water - every inch of my map has access

Education - 2 lower and 1 high school in every district, no universities built yet

Built my second city today. Managed to get to 55,000 population so far. For some reason though, all my RCI demands are zero.

Also, something I didn't realise, oil/ore get used up pretty quickly. So, they give you a nice boost to taxation, but after a couple of hours the entire district suddenly becomes worthless.

Also, road management is a pain, lol. I spent half my time re-doing roads, expanding to larger and larger ones!

I am on my 3rd city with a population of 103k.

Road planning I have found have 1 way systems running around the edge, as wide as possible as fast as possible. I found a nifty way to boost house prices is have a block of fire, police, schools, parks, and medical services very closely, then sprawl out from there. Housing taxes go through the roof (I was able to lower industrial and commercial to 4% whilst keeping housing at 8% and still make close to 5k a week. If I pushed it up to 13% on all, I would be having around 31k a week.

On my 3rd city now, got it up to 62k. Working ok so far! :D

Also, watched Sevadus on Twitch TV build a city which get to 70k - the one thing he did was he stuck to gravel roads for everything. His traffic was free flowing, no jams (well, up until the point when he added the port/rail freight depot).

The road AI isn't the best.

One thing I've found frustrating about this game after playing it for quite a long time now, you can't build say an office sector or similar and upgrade it to the top tier without building every kind of service near by. They have to for example have a cemetery close by, elementary school (even though no one goes to school there), etc. etc.

That has been my experience anyway, and even now my little office sector isn't fully upgraded some offices still say they need coverage even though they have coverage from everything. It's a bit frustrating.

I've also found that having wide roads is more or less a waste of time, the traffic isn't intelligent enough to make use of every lane until you come to a junction. So your flow doesn't really that much from upgrading, you just get more capacity at junctions.

Its more about proximity, not what the road map says.

I thought that but all the services are extremely close by, I created a rectangular office park and build the services round the edge, the coverage is definitely there (and the proximity), I don't understand it.
