[mdt] How do I Deploy Internet Explorer silently via MDT

Got it installed but got a warning I think was 40007 that suggests pre-requisites were missing for Internet Explorer 11. Just don't like warnings, OCD

Most of the Pre-Reqs are missing or other people have had issues with the updates.

You need to install the pre requisites first then install the ie11 full package. there will be an ie11 log in the windows directory telling you what you need

Found that link, the top 3 KB articles pointed to links that were no longer available for x86 downloads so gave up on that article and had a bit more of a look around. Gave the 2nd from bottom try this morning and that is available so am going through them again.

So near, yet so far away.

On the install it tries to download an update which has already being downloaded to the Packages folder

When looking at the log IE_Main it says:

Error downloading prerequisites file (KB2834140): 0x800c0005. But the update is already in the packages folder in MDT, is their something else that I have to do to make it grab updates out of the Packages folder in Deployment workbench. The OS Packages were imported as per article.

The KB2834140 update is showing in installed updates, I am now trying to install that, reboot and then install IE11.

Must be on Plan K now , never mind, sure must crack it eventually, got until May to get the Image up and running.

What command switches do you people use within MDT, I can either use the MSI or EXE that were exported from IEAK tool.

I have got the update installed, restart and then install IE but it still tries to connect to the internet and then the logs show a failure to download KB2834140

Even installing the KB2834140 update manually, rebooting and then retrying manually. Still tries to download the update from Internet. Error message in IE_Main.log.

I used the .EXE exported from the IEAK. When I added this as an application to MDT I didn't use any switches at all, just the name of the executable. It shouldn't need anything else if the settings were set correctly through the IEAK wizard. Use Arthurs link above to see the process which I used.

Is there 2 different versions of IEAK, plus I am running the tool on a x64 bit machine but the target machines are x86. Does this influence things

I'd try the IEAK on a x86 machine as it does look at the version of IE11 on the machine.

If so you should at the start of the wizard select License Type: Internal Distribution via a Corporate Intranet

Then later on you should be able to choose 'Internal Install' option. If you don't get this then make sure you are running the latest IEAK as this was a new feature

Not that I'm aware of, just the one IEAK for IE11 available here

I will go through the wizard in just a tick to see what I get. But for now, this is the full process I went through to get mine working:

1) Download the relevant prerequisite packages for your OS i.e. Win 7 x64 or x86 (or both) from here : IE11 on Windows 7

2) Put them in folders such as c:\packages\x64 and c:\packages\x86

3) In MDT, under the Packages section create 2 subfolders. Call them "Win 7 x64" and "Win 7 x86"

4) Import the packages you downloaded above into their relevant subfolders

5) Under Advanced Configuration -> Selection Profiles, create 2 new selection profiles. Call them "Win 7 x64 Prerequisites" and "Win 7 x86 Prerequisites"

6) Edit each of these to only include the relevant package folder you created above

7) On a Win 7 x64 machine, install the IEAK 11. Then download the installer packages for both IE11 32 bit and 64 bit

8) Run through the IEAK wizard, following the steps as shown on the page mentioned by @Arthur

9) Repeat the process for both 32 and 64 bit versions of IE11. Save the resulting .exe files somewhere

10) In MDT, under the Applications folder, create a subfolder called "Mandatory IE11"

11) Import both of the .exe's into this folder. The install command line should just be the name of the file, no switches

12) Edit your Windows 7 installation task sequence (I have one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit so do the following to both)

13) In the Pre-Install section, find the "Apply Patches" node. Change the drop-down box for the selection profile to the relevant one you created earlier i.e. "Win 7 x86 Prerequisites"

14) Further down, under the "State Restore" section, right after the bit called 'Tattoo', add a new Group. Call it "Mandatory IE11"

15) In this group choose to add a new step for 'Install and application'. Browse to the relevant version of IE11 from the subfolder created earlier

16) Directly after this step, add in a 'Restart computer' step.

17) Save the task sequence and try a deploy

OK, just ran through the IEAK wizard. It's less complex than I had in my head.

When you run it, the first few screens ask you for:

a) A place to save files

b) The OS you want to create a build for

c) The language you want

d) If you want to create a full installation package (you do)

e) A feature selection page.

This selection page is where you should see an option ticked for 'Internal Install' - see picture. Having this enabled should prevent it searching for updates online

Yep got that now, re-install and check the box for Internal Distribution

Still getting the update issue though so gave the machine an IP address that it could bypass the proxy and download the updates it needed and that worked.

So now thinking is that what I should do, set an IP just for the IE 11 install and then set back to DHCP afterwards.

You shouldn't need to if this is an MDT deploy. As long as you have the correct packages added into MDT (see my notes above) and you are using the latest installation file of IE11 to edit with the IEAK, then it shouldn't need to be downloading anything at all from the internet

And so the saga continues, there is a work around it, to set a reservation in the DHCP for an address that can avoid the proxy and so get the updates it needs straight from the web.

Tried changing IP mid build and it doesn't like that, there is an Apply Network Settings which I treiod but it didn't like that either and came up with an error saying it couldn't contact the MDT server

The update even shows before IE tries to install and there is a reboot after update installed, but still it tries and download from the Internet.

I am also now doing the IEAK on the same version of OS as the build i.e. 32bit .

Why not deploy IE11 via WSUS update during the build process? It does take up a tad more time since it needs to install the update, but I've found it to be pretty reliable. Other alternative is to inject IE11 directly into your WIM file, so that it's part of Windows from the get go.

I've never personally had IE11 added as a package in MDT.
