Any good Database lesson plans?

I'v been asked by several teachers to plan some database lessons for Year 5 classes (as the ones they have been given are crap).

 

The kids have already searched simple + complex databases, set up thier own class database, and completed a worksheet based on that class database.

 

Aside from setting them loose on the 'Net, I'm out of ideas; there are 2 lessons left on Databases; anyone have any ideas of what I can get them to do?

im out of touch with what year, year 5 is but have you thought about simple SQL queries,

 

so select all rows, and then add some conditions in, using where. Just so they get an idea on how to filter results

Have they done anything about data types yet - did their class database maybe contain different types of data? It's probably worth going over it again for a lesson, just so they defiantly get the idea. You could give them a largish database of some kind containing some data formatting errors and ask them to fix them.

Year 5 is 9/10 years old. SQL is probably overdoing it a bit, but "filtering" sounds like an excellent idea. You could set up an exercise where they act as the computer sorting a database - write them a "program" in the form of a worksheet with branching if/then statements, then get them to put each record through that "program" and sort the data.

As Mr Happy said, Get the teachers to plan there own lessons, if they do not understand how to use databases why are they teaching it, and if they dont understand then it can be up to you to teach the teachers.

Cheers for the input guys. Problem around here is that none of the teachers actually ever planned ICT lessons really, and at the moment are using LCP plans which are, frankly, quite bad IMO. Using Excel to teach Databases? C'mon

Year 5 need to cover errors in databases, how they can spot them i.e. using graphs to highlight posible errors etc. Maybe set them a database which has errors, and ask them to highlight the errors, then use the internet (searching a large databse) to correct the errors. Collect and record their findings highlighting how they spotted the errors and what the data should have been. Were there any checks they could have been made to stop these errors. (Unit 5C evaluating information)

 

You could also expand into search skills on the internet (searching a large database etc) Its something kids seem to miss out on, how to enetr an efficient search criteria and then be able to scan the results to find suitable data.

Our website is made with Publisher just to piss off people with non MS browsers. I'm forced to change the rationale though because it no longer works correctly with IE :? (assuming it ever did)

I couldn't agree more with this sentence. They need to go do some IT TRAINING tbh. If they can't tell you how to normalise a database or what a primary key is for then they're NOT QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB (in my books).

 

Maybe you should do their job and earn their salary too hmm?

 

You wouldn't have a maths teacher that has trouble doing multiplication teaching maths would you? Why is IT different?

I take a fair few of the database modules for Y5, 6 & 7 because the teachers don't are out of their comfort zone. One of the things I do with Y5 is show them how to create a fairly simple class database, a little on validation, but as it is very mixed abilities, I don't want to lose them. I show them how to edit and then filter.

 

They then open a database I produced based around "Guesswho", add a few more records using the skills they have learnt and then we play "Guesswho". I've made deliberate mistakes in the database that they have to spot and correct.

 

When I'm going through an ICT suite, I can usually gauge how well it is going by the noise level and the number of kids on youtube. This lesson tends to be a bit loud because we have 30 kids asking "Does she have a beard?" However, they all tend to be on task.

I have compiled an 'Animals Database' and sheets with information regarding certain animals, 'type', 'habitat', 'lifespan', etc, requiring learners to find the information and then insert the same into the database. The first ten animals details are contained within the sheet and there are a further five that require learners to find the information from the internet. Works very well.

What are they being taught in Access? MySQL? MsSQL? php and a combo with mysql?
