issue with google chrome not opening for student users

Are you using roaming profiles? if so, are students signing into Chrome and configuring it to allow apps to run in the background?

there seems to be a bug in Chrome which causes this to fail in the way you describe; when the user logs on, Chrome auto-starts in the background and this then blocks Chrome starting in the foreground.

Open task manager immediately after logon but before trying to launch Chrome - check to see if a Chrome process is already running. If it is, then kill it and see if Chrome now launches OK.

If that works, you need to either stop students from using background apps or add something to your login script to kill any running instances of Chrome.

We think that this is a bug introduced by a recent update to Chrome; we're sort of hoping that Google will fix it soon (but I'm not holding my breath!)

Has anyone else tried this method?

After lots of troubleshooting today I've started to think the issue is must be related to this setting on chrome.

Last week I set up chrome group policy on our network and set it so one of our Computer suites has restricted chrome from running in the background. Since then we have still had a few issues... I feel like issues could still be happening because of old group policies and settings... so i've reset all of the students profiles.

I'm hoping that students will have no issues and staff will carry on having issues. If this is the case then I will deploy the group policy to the whole school and think about resetting all teacher profiles (will need to warn teachers before I reset because they will lose their desktop files and probably other important settings).

Remote Process Explorer is a GREAT tool for a quick-fix...

EDIT:

Also, one more point id like to add... While troubleshooting I found that if i changed the default browser BACK to internet explorer or Firefox, chrome would work again once you relog. Possibly something to do with chrome being added onto a network that was designed for IE maybe?

WHO KNOWSSS

Even if this gets fixed.. its still frustrating that we couldnt find what was causing chrome to start up every time...

Renamed chrome in app data.

Deleted all profiles just for the giggles

No change

Are your AppData folders being copied to the server? Or are they excluded from roaming?

Just to add, I'm having exactly the same problem as witch. Started last Friday for us.

Things I've noticed or tried without finding a resolution include:

  • Version 40.0.2214.115 was working fine.
  • The update to version 41.0.2272.76 broke Chrome.
  • There was an update to version 41.0.2272.89 last night - it has not fixed the issue for me.
  • Launching 'chrmstp.exe' in %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\\Installer will launch it as if for the first time (imports bookmarks from IE, no extensions etc).
  • Deleted/renamed %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data.
    • This point will work for a single launch, then it will fail again, which I find extremely odd.

[*]It appears to be an issue with the updated version(s) because on all PCs with the older version (40.0.2214.115) settings are preserved/roamed fine.

[*]No chrome.exe processes on login to kill.

[*]Chrome.exe processes appear when attempting to launch, it sits in TM for a few seconds, then disappears.

Google Chrome Version 41 - GPO Set User Data Directory

this fixed it for us, the trailing \ on the user data dir GPO setting kills it... just remove that and it should be good to go

THANKYOU!! I can stop bashing my head against the desk.... such a stupid little thing been causing so many issues

yep, its a bit silly that they don't test any of this stuff - its worked for years and they break it :/ i could have swore the trailing slash was required when it initially got released
