synaesthesia Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 What do you do with these stupid things? I mean, Apple clearly believe we are mind readers and don't need instructions. So, we have a brand new (and crap) iPad Air (Seriously, it's awful! It's about as responsive to touch as a eunoch) and it comes with an Apple branded SIM card. Only mention of anything related in the settings is EE. Do we just need to get a SIM only/data tarriff from somewhere and slap it in? Or do we need to do something on or with the supplied SIM? Was bought from John Lewis.

Was bought from John Lewis. We just got a data tariff from Schools Broadband, popped the SIM in away we went. I'm not sure what the supplied SIM is, ours didn't come with one. Assuming you haven't signed up to any plans, I'd just put it to one side and find a suitable data plan from EE, 02 etc. 02 were the best value when we looked.
m25man Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Buy a 3 data sim from Amazon You can get these up to 12GB that lasts for 1 year Or 3 Gig for £20 lasts 3 Months
Arthur Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 it comes with an Apple branded SIM card. The Apple SIM card is a multi-network SIM card, although in the UK it's currently limited to EE. http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/10/new-ipads-come-with-special-multi-carrier-apple-sim Apple's iPad announcements today focused overwhelmingly on the iPad Air 2's thickness, its screen, and its internals, but it and the iPad Mini 3 got some other quieter upgrades too. One such upgrade is a new "Apple SIM," a nano SIM card that allows the cellular models to switch between multiple mobile carriers without changing the actual card. At launch the card supports AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and UK carrier EE. Though Apple is still selling Verizon-compatible iPads, the US' biggest carrier remains conspicuously (though perhaps not surprisingly) absent from the list. One thing Apple is emphasizing with the SIM is that it can be used to secure short-term data commitments, rather than the regular monthly charges most cellular tablets generally assume. In theory, you can jump between carriers based on the one that's offering the data you need for the price you want, and you never have to swap out the SIM card to do it. Apple is also playing up the ability to buy data from international carriers when traveling, though obviously the carrier list will need to expand before this is practical. Though the Apple SIM is launching in the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3, we would expect it to start showing up in other Apple products eventually. Simplifying the product line instead of shipping carrier-specific versions of iPhones and iPads seems like the right move for Apple to make; let's hope carriers continue to climb on board.
synaesthesia Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Aha, cheers. Annoyed the hell out of me to find absolutely no documentation or ANYTHING to suggest what to do with it. Will give @SchoolsBroadband a call.
MatthewL Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 If its for home and you are with EE (other providers probably do it) but you can get a sim only and share your data from your current package for a small monthly fee. Failing that if its a school device does the school have a mobile contract, if so worth looking for a data sim, cannot see it been much at all.

synaesthesia Posted February 13, 2015 Author Posted February 13, 2015 Spoke to Vinnie yesterday with regards to those, very helpful indeed. However looks like coverage is likely to be very ropey! Advised they get a pay and go 3 for the time being as it looks like they are having broadband fitted imminently. Will be bearing it in mind for future of course, I can imagine it may pop up again!
SchoolsBroadband Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 I'm in talks with another wholesale provider about access to all 4 of the big networks so watch this space. I'll be in touch Dave
