mikkydoos Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Somebody please help me to keep my sanity. I'm going mental.... Got Meraki set up and am trying to push apps silently to a load of Ipads. All 'pads initially configured with Apple Configurator, Meraki profile is installed. All the 'pads are on the same Apple ID. I've got VPP set up and licensed several apps for that ID. They all appear on the MDM/VPP tab and the User Management tabs states that the User Status is 'Associated' with a tag of the group the devices are in. I've then gone to MDM/Apps and added the apps again, set the scope, auto granted the license. The apps are trying to install on the 'pads and show up in the Meraki System Manager App but I'm getting a prompt for the Apple ID password for every app that tries to install, on every device. Some of them have a blue dot (to indicate managed?) some don't (came from the app store rather than pushed?) What am I doing wrong ?? Please help me before I go insane.

I get password prompts for apps to install... although when I've recently reimaged one of my banks they go on without prompting... no idea what is different.... I guess just make sure in settings that the itunes account is all linked up? I think it's very hit and miss with the ipads... I'm in a constant battle with them!! 1
howartp Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Password for all apps suggests you've got the option ticked in the profile to require password for all apps? We have it for our 12 student iPads, but not for our 150 staff iPads. Peter 1
tmoon-mint Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 As above, check the settings that you have configured in your management profile. There is an option to prompt the user every time an app installs. 1

biz Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 All the 'pads are on the same Apple ID. I could never get silent installs with the same Apple ID in multiple iPads, I spent last summer trying! Eventually I had to concede defeat and create an Apple ID for each iPad. 1

Any idea which Apple dept to contact to whiteliest our IP ??

Griff Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 We have it working so you don't need the Apple ID password everytime, all you have to-do is click 'install' when it pops up saying Meraki wants to install the app. I believe the trick is in the Apple configurator setup. @_Ben has pretty much setup the iPads for me at my place sure he won't mind me sharing his documentation on it; Setting up master iPad image • Ensure all apps required for the base image have been downloaded on the Mac’s iTunes and imported into Apple Configurator. • Plug the iPad you want to use as the template into the Mac. • Go to the ‘Prepare’ tab at the top-middle and then the ‘Apps’ tab. • Tick the apps you want to be installed onto the iPad. • Go back to the ‘Settings’ tab and input the iPad name. This will usually be ‘Dept-ipad-##’. • Ensure Meraki Management is unticked. Ensure Restore is set to ‘Don’t restore backup’ • Press the ‘Prepare’ button at the bottom-middle and it will start preparing the iPad for wiping. • Once it installs the iOS, it will come to the setup screen. Go though the setup. • Passcode is always **** • Join the WiFi and then go to settings and insert the County proxy (**.***.*.** ****). • Wait for all apps to finish being installed from Apple Configurator. • Reorganize the apps as you wish, putting them in order & folders. • Unplug the USB cable. • Connect STAR or AR to the schools code (**-*******). • Go to settings and log into the ‘iTunes & App Store’ page. • Turn on App and Updates under ‘Automatic Updates’. • Go to WiFi and forget the ‘woodland’ network. • Plug the USB cable back in. • Connect the iPad to a non-proxy wireless (normally a mobile hotspot). • On Apple configurator, go to the ‘Supervise’ tab and click on USB Connected. • Select the iPad and then tick Meraki Management under ‘Profiles:’ • Change ‘Update iOS’ to Never Update • Press ‘Apply’ on the bottom-middle. • Once completed, click on ‘Devices’ in the top menu bar and choose ‘Backup’. • Name the backup deptipads-device e.g. ‘***********’. • Click on ‘Create Backup’. • Unplug the iPad. He might well correct me but I believe the whole issue we had with it asking for the Apple ID password was due to our proxy settings hence connecting it to a non-proxy hotspot (we normally use a phone) 1

Yeah that's pretty much it, but as it has been said sometimes it is hit-and-miss with the popups. 90% of the time it's just a button to say install and you're done. Having to connect it to an unfiltered/proxied network during install is because the Meraki profile doesn't quite install right and also the activation ticket from Apple has issues too when imaging. 2

I've re-prepared them, re-enrolled them into Meraki and they are registering - profile installs etc. 1. Are you guys going to m.meraki.com to enrol your devices or are you installing the Meraki configuration profile with Apple Configurator. ?? I'm not getting the Meraki message to install the app. The first 10 will just install with no prompt, the rest all ask for the Apple ID password... then they install. In Meraki all licenses are 'auto-granted', all app set to install on 'all devices'. 2. What am I doing wrong ? 3. Im thinking maybe I the app store and VPP cant verify my accounts on the devices although the ID and password are present on them. There is a page in Apple Configurator where you can install a certificate. Do I need to do that with a Meraki Cert' ?? I've uploaded the Apple one to Meraki but not Meraki to 'Configurator...?? Is there one? It sounds like the apps are trying to install without a VPP licence assigned. Do the apps show up in the App Store purchase history on the iPad? This is what assigning a VPP licence does - it 'gifts' the app to that Apple ID. Once the Apple ID owns a copy of the app (ie. the app is in the purchase history) it will install without a password. As a side note I enrol my devices in Meraki through the Meraki Systems Manager app, when installed it gives some extra functionality such as GPS location and the ability to send text messages. I do have to manually install the app, as it can't be pushed before the device is enrolled. 1

I then add the app to MDM/Apps, (presently) to all devices, assign the licenses to all user. It pushes the app to the Ipad, then prompts me for a password. The first 10 install fine - MS Word, Powerpoint and a few others. Im totally stuck
mikkydoos Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 Think I've cracked it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had 'Content Rating' enabled for apps in my Meraki profile. Anything that is (or isn't?) content rated was prompting for the password to install. Just to add....I probably could have done it with just one ID across the devices, but probably best not to. I want to say a massively big thanks :angel:to all who helped me here. Super appreciated. biz Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Excellent! Well done @mikkydoos I'd forgotten about that content rating "feature", I fell foul of that one too the first time I set restrictions. I even suggested to Meraki Support that they put a little warning on the page, but they didn't seem to get the issue. Thanks for the reminder, I'm adding a note to my documentation now...
