Phildw Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 One of our staff wants me to set something up whereby when a book is returned to the library thru a 'letterbox' a sound is played. What's the best way to do this? Any recommended toys/devices that people have used? Have a friend who did something similar using a webcam and software, which I could do, but don't really want to set aside a laptop just for that...
fairm010 Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Could you use a reed switch attached to the 'letterbox' flap?
abillybob Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 A motion detector on a Raspberry Pi and a small speaker maybe... Just thinking from the top of my head. 1
tsutton Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Cheapest option is to attach a bell to the letterbox flap! 1

LiamH Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 McGyver it, bit of string tied to the letter box that tugs on a small hammer that turns on the kettle, that starts to whistle. Bonus tea at the end of it too!

Phildw Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Cheers for the replies. As far as I know there is not going to be a flap, just a hole in the wall, and she wants it to play a custom sound (mp3 or wav etc). It's part of a whole big relaunch of our library.
AndyGaukroger Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Would something like this be of any use? Motion Feedback MP3 Player OR http://www.talkingproducts.com/pir-motion-sensor-talking.html Edited January 13, 2015 by AndyGaukroger 1
Phildw Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Would something like this be of any use? Motion Feedback MP3 Player OR PIR Motion Sensor – Plays MP3 Sound Files - Point of Sale Displays Yes, that second link looks good. I actually just saw the same thing on Amazon, but at 2x the price! Cheers P.S. First link looks good too, could use that for when I go to the gym!
unixman_again Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 A switch like this IP67 Snap Action Coil Spring, Flexible Rod,, NO/NC, 250V Omron WLNJ-G connected to a bell probably the easiest seeing as there isn't a flap.
