Dos_Box Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) It's occured to me that since I have Windows 8.1 on both my desktop and laptop (plus Start8 to make it more manageable) the amount I use Metro is minimal to say the least. Probably about once or twice a week at the most and even then it's only something like a weather app. So my question is this. If you are using W8 on a device other than a tablet, do you ever use Metro for anything? Please fill out the poll and let's see what the actual use is shall we? Edited January 7, 2015 by Dos_Box

penfold Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I don't actually use any apps really, but I do tend to use the Metro screen quite a bit as I have my "admin apps" pinned there. I tend to pin items there as I have become used to grouping things there and keeping a clean desktop. Are you trying to find out if Metro screen is used or the apps on it as I would say I used Metro quite a bit but the apps not at all?
LosOjos Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Never, as I haven't found a single Metro app that is as good as it's desktop counterpart, let alone better. If I had a W8 tablet, that might change my opinion, but on a desktop it's absolutely pointless. At least Microsoft appear to have agreed on this judging by W10!

All the computers I use regularly are Win 8.1 or Win 10, but I don't have many programs I use daily - so these are all pinned to the Taskbar. Those that I use > once a month I have pinned in groups on the Start Screen on my Win 8 machines and I'm considering swapping back to that for Win 10 (think the revised Start Menu is an unsightly kludge). Metro apps? Never. Maybe if I could be bothered to use an MS account...
abillybob Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I have Windows 8.1 at home with Classic Shell installed. It's boot to desktop as well. I completely forgot my computer had the Metro interface until the other day when the charms bar came up. Don't even think about it now.

Don't use any apps or widgets (maybe weather), i also hate being constrained to fullscreen and surely the whole point of "windows" is to have apps in erm windows. going to look and start 8 now.
gshaw Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) Seeing as I've selected the "all the time" option I've got to explain myself, although just realised the word "apps" was in the title rather than the Metro UI in general With the improved search box in 8.1 (only slides in from the side) I don't mind the tiles as a Start Screen, actually find the Metro news app really good as well as email, social media etc. I have the Start Screen as default on my home desktop and work laptop. I hate the idea of pinning loads of apps to the taskbar so have had to learn to live without jump list recently opened documents which has been a pain; in that regard will be glad to have some form of Start Menu back in Win10. Also got a personal Surface Pro 3 and work Surface RT that I use the Metro snap gestures with all the time, one aspect of the Win8 UI that works really well on touch devices imo. However most of the programs I run are desktop mode, OneNote is something I use as a native Win8 app but that's not working with our federated Office 365 now so had to go back to the desktop version whcih I'm not best pleased about Edited January 7, 2015 by gshaw
DMcGuigan Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 A few times a day, mostly for searching for apps, but also because Skype (I know, blech, but they refuse to use anything else) doesn't allow for group video / screenshare calls in it's Desktop mode, so I've had to resort to the Application

bushby Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 i use the metro start menu as its nice and orginised for my games catalog but thats all that sits on it unless im app developing then its got the apps on it aswell
