Next up is memory. Anyone recommend cheap, not so cheap and rocket fuel memory for me to choose from.

It starts off small, you may get some new fans.. But it develops.. Sooner or later it's uncontrollable.. And you find yourself upgrading or rebuilding just because you can.. (Coincidentally I have both tattoos and build my own gaming PC.. how am I still sane?) I've advocated Corsair Vengeance for pretty much everyone that has asked me. But get the low-profile RAM, not the ones with the silly obnoxious heat sinks. I hear Kingston do some good kits, too, but personally I haven't used them. Edited January 6, 2015 by Garacesh

Corsair vengance black or red are a good choice with timings of 1800 or 2011 if you DO intend to oc. I just hope you've got gaming peripherals. Nothing like killing off a rig with a dell keyboard and mouse.

(I'm ashamed to say that interior aesthetics played a reasonable part in my build. Dunno why, as there's no window, but I do know that when I open it up to clean filters etc it looks damn fine in there.) 2

I'd say get a 120GB SSD for your operating system and the odd game or two, and get a 1 or 2TB HDD for the rest of your stuff. @LEMarchland, @Sunnyknight - function over form, damnit. They do look kinda cool, I'll give you that, but there's no reason to have them at all. From a function perspective they're just useless and daft. Big fancy memory grills is like having one of those bonnets with an intake hole, but then keeping the engine stock.. (I don't really do cars that much, so my terminology is a little off..).. 'Ricers', I think these kinds of car owners get called Don't rice your PC folks lol.

Bawwwsss I was considering the red ones to match the detailing on my mobo (MSI Z97 Gaming 7 Intel LGA1150 Z97 ATX) but I seem to recall the black ones were cheaper at the time and, it turns out, looked better in the build. lol. Ebuyer seem to have a lot of different Corsair vengance memory. They all seem to be similar in price so any advice which to go for. Can only really comment on what I've got, but I have 2 of the 8GB sticks of Corsair 8GB DDR3 1866Mhz Vengeance Memory - Ebuyer and they're great. Though this may be because 16GB is a bit of overkill!

To me, a some of the fun was picking parts that looked good together. If I was broke, maybe it would be different. (I did way overpay for my case because I wanted one that pleased my eye). At least I didn't get LED ram! I was tempted by LED fans, but the placement of my PC meant that they'd not be visible.

I'm not saying don't accessorise your case, I've modified mine quite a bit (mostly LED fans and LED light strips) and I admittedly do think the weird and wonderful huge heat sinks do look kinda cool.. But there's no function at all. LED fans are better not because they're LED but because the fan performance is better than the stock fans. LED light strips are good because if my PSU starts to fail I'll see the brightness dimming (at least that's what I tell myself...) I don't actually hate the huge heat sinks.. They do look good.. They just tend to get in the way a lot.. And hydro coolers are awkward enough to put in without anything else making it worse Which is admittedly the real reason I got low(er)-profile memory.

(I was doing this 10's of years ago, guilty) Maybe its as I'm getting older, but I would prefer a sleek, small as possible, silent/quiet but powerful PC that does not require freezer to cool it or one million LEDs (of any colour). 1

I bought a hydro cooler for the performance factor and to make my PC quieter (nobody likes stock heat sink fans whirring away...).. I upgraded to Corsair fans because they were a tonne quieter than the cases' stock fans, I would have bought them anyway regardless of the lights.. And I got the LED light strips 'just because'. So really the majority of my 'mods' are functional.

No, it has not died. Colour tubing, 100 led lights around your case, different liquid colors, different color cases, case modding, swapping out panels for fans.... Modding is increasing. I think it depends where the machine is. I have a Silverstone case of a similar ilk to the one @LosOjos under the TV, but my main/games PC I wanted to be more of a statement.
