localzuk Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Has anyone else noticed just how poorly optimised the SMART site is now? The Education homepage is 4.5MB in size! That giant smiling child is 787KB alone - I can drop its JPEG size down to 99KB without any real visible artifacting. They have a 628KB Javascript file and a 509KB CSS file linked too! Running the Javascript file through a free online optimiser drops it down to 303KB. The Education Hardware page is 4.5MB as well. So poor! Its just plain ridiculous. Who are they hiring to create this stuff?! Edited December 15, 2014 by localzuk
zag Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Terrible isnt it! The website navigation is awful as well. submit them some feedback https://smarttech.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_40B2xhglSyxwKb3
GrumbleDook Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 I was at a recent think tank event they hosted, and will be in touch with them again soon. If no-one has any objections I will point them to this thread and suggest they join in the fun?
localzuk Posted December 15, 2014 Author Posted December 15, 2014 Absolutely, that'd be great. They need to do some serious work on the useability of their site.
AdamzB Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Maybe you should spend your time optimizing your own site first rather than bemoaning others. At 8MB it's almost twice the size of the SMART site. A 6.5MB swf file. It's 2014 not 2004.
localzuk Posted December 16, 2014 Author Posted December 16, 2014 (edited) I have no control over it, but when I did, the site totalled 1.2MB in size, for the whole lot, all pages and assets. I've made my views known to my bosses about our site. I'm consistently ignored. However, there is a major difference between a pokey little school and a global company. So, keep your snark to yourself. Edited December 16, 2014 by localzuk 1
StevieM Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 If no-one has any objections I will point them to this thread and suggest they join in the fun? I doubt they'll bother. I pointed them in the direction of this site during the initial Notebook Advantage discussion and answer came there none.
