Currently looking at a replacement for our File server. We have a 10GBe backbone and capacity in the core switch next to where the new server will sit to connect it in via 10GBe. Would this be worth the extra cost or is it overkill?

Unless you're running a server with a RAM drive, Enterprise SSDs or 12Gbit/s SAS, it just isn't worth it. Even 12Gbit/s SAS (1200MB/s) is the theoretical max, but you could easy buy a dual Gigabit card and team both adapters, giving you 2Gbps in each direction.

I think it'll be a number of years yet before 10Gbps becomes the norm in servers in schools, plus they'd be integrated on the motherboard anyway, as Gigabit adapters are today.
