north-ict Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I want the sonic cable tester... I read that but in my head it was GIR that was saying it.........
Joanne Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 I read that but in my head it was GIR that was saying it......... Just an FYI - I definitely DO NOT sound like GIR unless I'm really excited... OOHHH A TACO! 1
sonofsanta Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I could just set a laptop pinging the server... but can't be bothered standing at the switch cabinet patching in each port one by one until I get flashes... Flashes ain't no guarantee you've found the right device if you've already found one unexpected mystery machine device, that's why I reckon you need a laptop with you doing the pings so you know when you've found the right one. Shouldn't take too long if you make yourself an engineer's cable: Get a network cable Snap the plastic clip off one end ??? ProfitEasily switch between patch ports without fiddliness 1
andydis Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 That'd be all well and good, but I need to patch in this monstrosity first. I have TP-Link thoooooooo innit. Basic. lol sorry , 3 hours sleep form looking after a 5 week old baby i just understand what ive put lol. cable wand is the way to go then :-) , can you borrow one? (feeder school?)
localzuk Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I'd recommend the Greenline NetCat Pro, plus a probe such as the Mills Tempo Digalert Probe (although, that one seems too expensive). A pretty good tester, which can also generate tones, combined with a probe. Its what we use here.
Little-Miss Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Just an FYI - I definitely DO NOT sound like GIR unless I'm really excited... OOHHH A TACO! Although she does like to sing the Doom song a lot... IT'S GOT CHICKEN LEGS! (always feel slightly better knowing there's someone else out there who knows what the hell i'm talking about)
pcstru Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) Depending on the switch, you should be able to look at the SNMP MIB nodes for the ports on the switch and then look for the MAC address of the device you plug in. Edited December 10, 2014 by pcstru
Joanne Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 doom doom doom doom doom doom... doomy doomy dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom

Joanne Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 This is when my forum skillz become apparent...
rad Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 You have all missed the obvious.... patch EVERY port into a switch and then you will be sorted. You can then sip your Lemsip knowing it is all sorted.

localzuk Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 After unpatching them all in the summer? presumably for security reasons? I think she'd love that. We got around this by enabling port based authentication - so ports won't work without being authorised anyway...
hallb15 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Tone generator is the way forward. I love mine and yes it does make nee naw sounds like a 70s fire engine (I was born in the 70s!) It came with my ByteBrothers PocketCAT 200 cable tester which is also brilliant. Now, tell me more about this doom song...?
hallb15 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Thanks @Little-Miss but I'm slightly disappointed to wasn't more to do with the soundtrack to Doom, the game Got me through my student days...null modem cable anyone???
north-ict Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 This is when my forum skillz become apparent... Man Invader Zim is such an awesome show loved it!
mac_shinobi Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Think If I was you, I'd stick to your original plan, whack a pc on the other end ( where that switch would normally connect to ) so am presuming the lighter grey coloured cable and then see which port number lights up active and see which port number on the switch is patched into what port number ..... as stated above this will give you your answer unless you order and invest in a port tester tool ( again as stated and suggested above )
Dkeen94 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Now that song will be stuck in my head for the rest of the day, thank god its just me in the office this afternoon! cheers @Little-Miss
