I am using Exchange 2010 and recently we started facing a strange problem for which i couldnt find a solution

Just in case anyone here faced the same thing

We are using Symantec Antispam Appliance with Exchange.

Things were find but recently people started complaining about the mails not received, or if sent they are not delivered and no notification appears if delivery was failed. On delivery reports its all normal, no max number of recipients restrictions etc

Everything else is to default

Sometimes mails are sent but not received on various accounts and it happens randomly

Sometimes mails are not received sent by others to the user

Its so frustrating to track where are they going and why not received?

Any tips?

How can i monitor all such mailboxes 24 hours and their activities?

@win Queue viewer is empty and there are no messages pending there. There is no list to be shown there

@Sam_Brown WebApp does not show them as well. User sent a mail from Gmail to this xxxx account it wasnt received. I sent from my Gmail to the same xxxx account and it was received without any problems?

So to be clear, this affects:

emails sent from internal accounts to internal accounts?

you said it affects external incoming emails

does it also affect internal emails that are being sent externally?

Have you tried tried tracing the email using the /ecp?

Check mxtoolbox.com and see if you are on the spamlist.

Perhaps your domain has been categorised as a sender of spam.

@Meldrew yes its happening with both internal and external emails and randomly on different accounts. Its not that a particular account is affected but its randomly happening with all accounts. Reports say that the message successfully delivered but it never appears on WebApp

@win no i am not on spammers list. All green checks there

1. On mxtoolbox.com you can test the health of your service by clicking smtp rather just blacklist. Check that too

2. Run MSupdate and install the rollups for exchange.

As this is happening on internal only emails I'd be starting to wonder if perhaps your databases need their indexes checking or something along those lines. I forget the name of the utility you use to run these sorts of integrity checks...

Could be DNS. Try doing an ipconfig /flushdns on the exchange server and your DCs

Also, did you patch up your exchange server with the latest service packs and roll ups?

Hi Karan_jhr, sorry I should have been clearer - MS have pulled the latest patch due to issues (outlook clients unable to communicate with exchange server) so it may be best to hold off installing SP3 until they release again.

Has there been a recent change that may have caused this issue? (have you just started using antispam etc, migrated servers / mailboxes etc)

just checking that you've done message tracking as Meldrew mentioned as I think this would be a great place to start?...

Get-MessageTrackingLog -sender “put sender email address here” if this find anything we can then further refine the search.

I would verify that your domain MX records are correct and that if you have multiple that all are correct and responsive.

Also ensure that there is a quarantine mailbox setup and check that after sending but not receiving.

SP3 is ok to install, they have pulled the faulty rollup (RU8) so if you go with MS update you will have the latest stable version (RU7). The new rollup will be released later.

SP3 was released almost 2 years ago! This means your exchange server is well out of date, i recommend updating asap - it may solve your problems.

@win I have flushed DNS

@colinged No we didnt install anything on the Server, it was working perfectly fine and all of a sudden this problem started

Messafe tracking shows successfully delivered but it doesnt appear in WebApp

All MX records are correct and responding

Before in the Symantec Antispam custom filters i had immidiate delete, now changed to Qurantine folder

Planning for SP3 now, i hope it will solve the problem

or upgrade to 2013 :)
