Mentioned on a thread a while ago that we had been donated 25 Kindles which fortunately have built in 3G (free) and WIFI so that gets me over the school wifi connection/proxy issue, however coming up against other issues. Speaking to my Amazon contact she seemed surprised that we (technicians as a whole) were having issues with them and could I feed back any of the issues/comments so they could review them. Below is my current list, please add anymore you can think off...and I've not used them yet!

WIFI - No proxy settings so most schools cannot use the Kindles on WiFi if they require these settings

Limit to how many are registered on one Amazon account (advice was to set up 25 accounts! or split between about 5)

Require credit card details to create the accounts - We as a school don't have one!

Got anymore Gotchas?

Currently trying to set one up as advised with my own Amazon account so I can play with it and check it put (and also see if when registered it actually connects to 3G which at the moment unregistered it does not so have had to drop it onto my home wifi which I didn't want to in the first place!) but it just gives me 'internal error' when I put my details in.

I somehow knew this was not going to be straight forward!

Well got a solution for the multiple accounts issue, have one account, register a device with that accounts, get the books to that account then manually download and install via USB to each Kindle. Not the best solution but at least only involves one account to manage. Thanks for the current suggestions, well feed back any info I get.

hi @TechSupp , hope you're well.

We're just looking at these for our fine establishment and I was going to investigate this: https://whispercast.amazon.com/ - wondered if you or others were aware of it and had any experience? If not I will trial and report back.

Re. proxy settings, a staff member had one that I let on our guest wifi and I seem to remember being surprised that it took the proxy details. They may have well have addressed that.

Ours are 3G and with Amazons help we have registered all ours now (which was a big issue), just need to sort a store and charge solution now! Will have a look at the link, interesting.

We've set up 15 kindle Fire HDs. They're android so you can set the proxy settings for the Smoothwall box. We even use Meraki MDM to manage them. All work on one Amazon account but to be honest they don't use amazon books. They use RM Books on them which works a treat.

No, sorry, ended up setting them all up to 3G so no problem getting connection and split them into so many per account (set up 5 accounts) due to book share limitations etc. Thats how Amazon advised me to do it. By the way ours are just the Kindle ereaders so definately no proxy settings. Bit if a pain with multiple accounts but cant get around that.

WhisperCast is still US-only isn't it?

Yup, just confirmed with Amazon, since Kindles have reared their heads again. *Looks at WhisperCast account created in October 2012*
