SIMS Running via Remote App on Server 2012 R2

Hi, Apologies if this should be in an RDP Remote APP Forum rather than MIS

 

Ive just setup a 2012 R2 server with RDP Connection Broker, Session Host and RD Web Access roles installed.

 

Im only testing internally to start off with but looking to deploy sims via RDP Remote App.

 

Ive installed SIMS to the RDP Server, published the app and logged in via the web portal. I get all the way to the point of sims loading (press the details button I can see the session starting logging into the user account) then the window closes and sims does not open.

 

Sims loads directly on the server fine, I have published Adobe Reader, Calculator and Paint to RD Web Access and these all work fine.

 

I have checked the allow command prompt settings in the Remote Applications Properties page.

 

Has anyone come across this or have any recommendations?

 

This type of setup is in a couple of other schools that I know of.

I only have experience with Citrix but I believe the following would be true in this scenario. SIMS needs access to the SIMS share on the server so I would think that it would only run as a application in a remote desktop session. If you are talking about remote deploying just the application I do not believe this would work as the share would not be mapped for the end user.

Did you publish SIMSLOAD? Or Pulsar? The startmenu shortcut includes both and you need to remove the simsload.

Im currently in the testing phase of deployment internally, connecting via https:\\localhost\rdweb or https:\\(my server)\rdweb which i can log in fine, I've published adobe reader, calculator, paint, word, excel etc and all of these work fine its only sims that crashes. When i open sims via the published standard shortcut the server manager / rdp console offers you, or via selecting simsload.exe or pulsar.exe (I've added all 3 to the rdweb page) the window opens i can see the start of the windows login page for server 2012 it gets to loading settings the same as the other published apps then the window just closes and sims does not load.

 

Ive removed all logon scripts / profiles, created a new domain admin in an ou with group policy inheritance blocked and moved the server to an ou with group policy inheritance blocked in case it was a problem with the account loading but this makes no difference.

 

The event viewer id's i receive on the server are:

 

event id 9009 desktop window manager

 

the desktop windows manager has exited with code (0xd00002fe) I've had a look online and a lot of citrix users have come across the same problem with a fix relating to the setting of maximum colour depth but this is not relevant in this scenario.

 

There is a 2nd error that appears each time in the rdp console but i don't have it to hand which details a delay occurred contacting the primarydc.mydomain.com the same again as above from research a lot of forum posts but not a resolution il follow up with the event id.

 

Just seems strange that sims opens and runs fine on the server itself.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue? I had my RemoteApp SIMS running fine but just recently it has stopped. It opens fine on the server itself. The RmoteApp tries to open but then comes up with a "Incorrect T:\SIMS\Connect.ini file : System .Exception

T is mapped on the server itself and as I said it worked fine previously. I don't think I have used it since the SIMS Autumn update. Do you think the update has broken something? I have updated the client on the server to the latest release.

Sorted : turns out the connect.ini needed to be changed from a redirect to a copy of the actual and also change the name of the server to its IP address in the ini file. All working now.

Always user the following command-line parameters

"C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS.net\Pulsar.exe"

Thanks for replying. I did have pulsar.exe in the settings rather than simsload. I think my problem was that originally I had amended the connect.ini but when I upgraded the client after the last update it reverted back to the redirect. Hence it stopped working.

I had a issue with my SIMS was loading then disappearing after logging in (minimising). I tested your suggestion above and it's fixed it!!

UPDATE : sorry I thanked too soon - it seems to have opened fine once and now every other time is back to opening minimised.
