fiza Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 We have a number of Dell OptiPlex 760 machines which randomly reboot - mainly when idle. The only thing that turns up in the event logs is Error 6008. We haven't had any new software installed or hardware changes. The machines are built from 2 different images. Some have a new image and some have been running with the old image for the last 14 months. Reboots have been reported from various different users. Anyone seen this before?
colinged Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 That will be frustrating! ...Possibly failing power supplies? / temperature - run hwmonitor on one where it occurs often. Are all bios versions the same? Is there a memory dump file created?... Maybe running a whocrashed or nirsoft bluescreenview might shed some light. With you saying that it happens mainly when idle it could be a power management feature enabled in the bios? - do these differ from the others? Cheers, Colin
Oaktech Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 I had a batch of GX520s that exhibited this very symptom. It turned out to be a failing PSU.
difinity Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Check for bulging capacitors on the motherboard or in the power supply.
Duke5A Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Did you check the Windows Update log? Maybe scheduled updates are being missed and it is rescheduling during the middle of the day.
witch Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Power supply. Seen it before and someone on edugeek told me to swap it with one from a PC that wasn't failing and the fault went with the PSU
kircher Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 (edited) We started having several PCs in our district reboot without warning too. Most people would tell me that they rebooted while they were on break or while the PC was idle. Looking at the logs we found event 6008's too. PSU would be a good guess but this problem requires a little bit more of troubleshooting. In our case we found that the PCs weren't rebooting but were instead blue screening. Make sure you go to Advanced System settings >> Advanced tab >> Startup and Recovery. Uncheck automatically restart and change the debugging information to Small Dump. We pushed out a reg key so that all of our district PCs would freeze on BSOD. We found by doing this that the problem was more widespread. Doing some troubleshooting on the BSOD led us to this tech net article: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/53b5a73e-b1f4-4361-9c8a-206f6a67f70f/bsod-csrssexe-crash-sxsdll-cause?forum=w7itprogeneral Which then led us to this hotfix: support.microsoft.com/kb/2675806/en-us While the description was similar to what we were seeing it wasn't exactly the same. With more PC BSOD'ing by the day we decided to push the hotfix out and our PCs are no longer BSOD'ing. From what I can tell either a Windows Update came through and broke something or it was an update to .net. We were in the same situation too. I knew it wasn't a hardware problem because multiple PCs were effected and they were using a different image. This may not be your exact problem but the above has good troubleshooting steps. cpjitservices Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Check for bulging capacitors on the motherboard or in the power supply. Be-careful undertaking the task of opening up a power supply, I wouldn't even bother. Just change it.
NikChillin Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) We have just encountered this problem with a group of Dell 3540 laptops, all BSOD at the same interval when idle, trying the hotfix now.... Boot error.... Windows 8 next methinks. Ah Ha! reincarnated! Edited January 23, 2015 by NikChillin
