Virgin 'superhub' on timer...

At home I use a Virgin SuperHub AKA Netgear VMDG480 - any problem with putting the psu on a timer, so that it turns off overnight? All my devices are set to not update automatically and are (probably) shut down when I'm tucked up in bed...

They're unreliable at the best of times, and Virgin's connections have a habit of not coming back on again; I'd say the less often it's restarted the better!

It's not the restarting that's a problem, but the half a hour it takes for the Superhub 2 to boot

Alright, not half an hour, but enough time to go and make a cup of coffee, sit down at your computer and still wonder what is going on.

Never had a issue rebooting a Superhub 2 (apart from the crazy boot time as mentioned by @Dos_Box ) but I do wonder if pulling the power every night is healthy for the equipment?

I guess it depends what you're trying to do, but aren't there any parental controls which can control what hours the internet is accessible for? Failing that, is that something opendns could do?

I guess I am a lucky one, I actually switch off the SuperHub 2 everyday when I leave the house and have no problems. It starts up within a few minutes.

 

I have got the SuperHub as a Modem only.

Are you wanting to power this down as part of a power saving function or as part of a not braodcasting a SSid when you are not there or not able to use it

PowerSaving I guess, just easier to switch one switch with all the networking stuff in one go, the computers get shut down properly first of course

 

I don't use the Wireless on the SuperHub anyway, a 802.11ac Access Point does that job and also gets shutdown.

use somehting like a monster plug. I have mine set up for the lounge so that when I turn of the TV it notices that power is no longer being drawn and shuts down 3 sub plugs into which I have my Bluray player, my backlight and a phone charger. All power up when I turn on the TV. They also avoid spikes and the internet link is filtered through it.
