Motherboard with Raid Controller

What motherboards would you recommend that has good RAID support? (0,1,5) and SATA3 (possibly supports more than 2TB) (Must be Intel Socket) Edited November 5, 2014 by newpersn

I have had sterling service (7 years, just retired) from an old 775 socket board using onboard RAID 5. That worked as a busy file server with one drive failure in that time.

 

I still wouldn't recommend doing this without a proper RAID card though. You will get better results with a proper card - you may find someone like ICT Direct can supply a tasty one for reasonable money too.

I temporarily used an RM One with an Intel DQ67OW motherboard (6 SATA ports), hooked up 4 4TB drives to make a temporary RAID array to copy some backups to. The files were copying at over 100MB/s maxing out either it's onboard Intel NIC or the NIC in the other server. I don't think having a dedicated RAID controller in this scenario would have given better performance.

Do you absolutely need RAID? the reason I ask is if you're using Windows 8, Storage Spaces are great:

I agree, good and onboard RAID is a bit of an oxymoron. I'd always go with a very expensive RAID controller with BBU.
