penfold Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I'm just looking at upgrading my phone (currently android) but am thinking of going to windows. The one thing that I have to consider is cost as I can't afford to pay a lot for a phone but don't want to get something which will be dated (as in slow)in 6-12 months time. I know there are some lumia users here so would you recommend the 925 for a new phone? I'm on contract and can't afford to buy a new phone as the wife needs a new one too so will just be looking for another cheap contract.

The headphone socket seems to be poor (seems to be a general1 lumia issue) mine got stuck in headphone mode so even when headphones removed no ringing couldn't talk to people etc needed to go back under warranty (ended up having to buy a new phone to use for 2 weeks as the three store in leeds said heres the number for nokia its your problem go away but other people i know who have had phones fail get loners fom their networks guess whos not getting any repeat business when my contracts up) and since the update to cyan the bluetooth to my car which was rock solid on lumia black is awful it can disconnect several times a journey making it all but useless so much so im really debating seeing if i can install old firmware to it and go back to windows phone 8 (the bluetooth seems to be a lumia cyan issue as the phone i had to buy had the exact same issue hopefully it will be fixed with updated one lumia denim but who knows) 1

Bear in mind apps are limited though, the store is having a crisis as most of the big app names have silently abandoned updating their apps in favour of focusing on Android/iOS. Some are better then others when it comes to the camera, some support NFC and contactless payment with a secure SIM, others like the 520 are just dirt cheap budget models. Depends what you want from the phone really. Best bet is to research on the main hubs WPCentral and /r/windowsphone 1
nickbro Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) I've got the 925, and had the 920 before it. Personally I'd get the 930, it's newer, has more, and IMHO looks better. Nokia Lumia 930 | Windows Phone (United Kingdom) Buying the phone outright is a better option for me, £15pm contract unlimited data, 5gb tethering, unlimited text and 200 minutes (I use skype when I can for calling which is free because of the data). I found getting the phone as part of the contract was more expensive in the long run, as I would be on a £35pm contract to get the 925, and may have to put a bit down initially, or it was when I got the 925. Just brought my boss a 530 dual sim, which seems pretty good, though you need an microSD card for extra memory. Brought my mum a 730 last month for her birthday, upgrade from the 520. The 520 has a tendancy for the buttons to stop working. 925 has a good camera on it, slightly better than the 920, but not as good as the 1020. I was quietly impressed with the 730, looks a lot like the old 920, infact it's bigger than my 925. The camera isn't as good and it's doesn't feel as expensive. Edited October 30, 2014 by nickbro 1

As both me and my wife need new phones I don't have the money to buy the phone and then go on pay as you go. Both phone are failing so we can't really wait too long. I don't play games much so wasn't bothered about the apps as windows seemed to have most things (or versions of) that I use. But I didn't realise that people had stopped updating apps:( I don't want to pay more than £16 per month so phone options are limited.
sonofsanta Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) My missus just got the Lumia 930, £40 upfront, £23pm from o2 (other deals may be available) and it is a properly lovely piece of kit. Quality build, gorgeous screen... and if you get it before the end of the year, you can claim a free wireless kit* including bluetooth speaker & Qi charging plate. The 930 comes with a wireless charger anyway, but the free plate is better, and includes a battery so you can charge your charger and get an extra boost of juice wherever you are. Windows Phone itself is a nice little OS; the only limit is the range of apps, so it's your shout as to how many weird and wonderful apps you use. I like to tweak, so I'm sticking with Android, but the 930 is a much nicer device than anything available with the little green robot. *The SSL cert will whinge, but it is a genuine site. You can follow the link from Nokia's site if you want to be certain. EDIT: and in the time I was writing that you've posted again about "no more than £16", so maybe not the 930. General impressions should still carry over, though: the 925 will be a beautifully engineered lump of electronics, and WP8 is a joy to use. It is still better than any android phone I have used and the 925 is slightly later so may not have the same issues. themightymrp Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I've only got the cheapo 520 model (work supplied phone on contract so costs me not a penny ) but I have to say I like the phone. As SYNACK says above, it was smoother on Windows 8 and tends to be a bit laggy on 8.1 although the new features are a great addition. I'm glad to find out that the lag side of things is not just because I have the budget model! Windows Phone is a nice OS though IMHO EDIT - Still waiting for the EduGeek app for it though!!! GRRRRRR
penfold Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) Just to update, I've been offered a lumia 930 for within my price range with 500MB of data(i was hoping for more - but is still more than i have currently) but I think this should be enough for me as I mainly use wireless anyway. rich_tech Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 From what I have tried of Windows Phones, they aren't any different to any of the other platforms really, all have good and bad points mentioned in the thread. App store was the main one for me that stopped me going to it though, it was fairly barren when I last tried it about a year ago, only the major things like FB/Twitter had apps. Shame really with the platform - its the same problem with the MS RT platform, the Nokia handsets are all fairly decent sets let down by that OS/Experience I thought, same for the tablets that are let down by RT and its app ghost town.
john Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I've had a 920 and now a 930 and very pleased with them, some driver issues at times with them (someone above mentioned bluetooth issues) and i've had wifi issues with the Tube Wifi and some APs but they usually get fixed in a new firmware / beta firmware. Other than that been very pleased with the 920 and hence why I bought the 930 without a worry Certainly wouldn't swap to something else at this moment.

They're nice looking phones and Windows phone has lots of potential but it worry's me they have been in the market for years now and you'll still struggle to find a decent app that's not made by third parties. You can buy a much better android phone for the same about price.... the nexus 5 for example and it runs android!

Got it the other day The speaker isn't bad tbh, just don't use it to do sound against a video as its latency is too high but just listening to audio etc.. its fine and has some good base if on a solid surface. The charger is a bit gimicy and doesn't do anywhere near as well as the Anker cabled unit I have.

Most of the main services have decent apps, you know apart from Edugeek of course

Most of the main services have decent apps, you know apart from Edugeek of course Agree i've yet to find an app I'm missing for WP that I could do on Android or Apple, and you can tapatalk for edugeek which works ok but isn't as good as the true WP App @ZeroHour has

(as the handsets looks well built and they are different) as i only used FB Twitter Instagram and a couple of upnp streaming receivers. so i dont think i would suffer from a limit on apps wish motorola would do an updated razor
