Dos_Box Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 We've just finished watching season one of Sword Art Online with our kids (aged 8 and 10) and they now seem very interested in the whole MMORPG thing (after much explanation and the terminology and how things work in these worlds) and I'm now on the hunt for something they can get their teeth into for theirt first try at an adventure game. The thing is I don't want an online game, but rather one which they can jump in and out of on the occasions we let them on the consoles. We have an XBox 360 and a Wii and am after something which is suitable for thier ages without being childish. Ideally it should be in a fantasy world, be 3d, have fights, quests, objects and all of the other things that are found in 'grown up' games, but without the swearing, graphic gore other adult content. Any suggestions?

Plus it's got to be next to nothing now. This, plus with many of the mods you can get on the PC for it, is fantastic. Graphical mods to improve the visuals, more NPCs, more quests etc

Plus it's got to be next to nothing now. It's a 16 certificate, so that's out I'm afraid. Not sure what it's a 16 for, but my kids have no problems bludgeoning animals to death in Minecraft!! Will have to look into that. I've just bought Lego LOTR though. At £15 it's not going to break the bank and give them a good into to the genre.

I had considered a Zelda game, but I'm trying to wean them off the Wii as there are no new titles now (not many for the Wii U TBH!) and I'd rather stick to the speed and usability of the 360. That and when the Wii U was released Nintendo switched off most of the Wii's online features and dropped game development for it immediately. Which was kinda annoying to say the least.

Dirt cheap, you can't actually lose (if you die you just respawn immediately, a bit more grizzled and scarred looking), cartoony in terms of the violence without actually being a cartoon, can completely customise your character, can't get lost because you just have to follow the glowing line but there's loads to find if you do wander off the beaten path, hilariously voiced ("Now then chicken chaser!"), you can make rude gestures and farting sounds at people for fun, and it's well stuffed with content to keep them happy for ages. You even have a pet dog in game. It's basically the perfect game for you here, I reckon (not played Fable 3, imagine it's similarly well suited. Did Fable Anniversary come out on 360 or was that XB1 only?)E EDIT: Fable Anniversary did indeed come out on 360. Although at £16 it's actually the priciest option, going by Amazon anyway - Fable 2 is only £4.50 (get it get it get it) and Fable 3 is £7.85. DOUBLE EDIT: another good option, not quite as kiddy as Fable but more MMO styled (as it was originally meant to be an MMO before they scaled back), is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. £20 on 360 but cheaper on PC. Gatt Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Possibly Skylanders if you're not attached to the contents of your wallet @Dos_Box - Try and avoid this (And the Disney variant) as long as possible - Trust me - your Bank Balance will thank you for it Bought this for our son last year (Giants) for the Wii and now has the Swap Force and wanting the new Trap Team update It costs a fortune to buy all the characters and, the traps for Trap Team! (traps = £5 avg, characters anywhere from £8 up to £20 a go)

It's not a particularly adult representation of it, mind - certainly nothing like in Bioware games - and is all approached in that slightly awkward, slightly amused British way, and the cartoony graphics certainly stop it being anything too, er, interesting. FWIW, you can get married and have children as part of a committed relationship as well. Personally, I don't think it'd stop me letting my kids play - I think it's the kind of thing that they would move past without question, and it's not too in your face from what I recall - but it is, of course, a decision that needs to be made on a case by case basis.
